Confused on building SharpDVD upgrade

Post by Capn Trips »

I knew I said I would stay my hand, and I hate beating a dead horse but I need a workaround. THIS THREAD discusses my confusion surrounding Kaseikyo decodes and the SharpDVD protocol. I understand that there is a potentially longer-term project to sort through the morass and update the tools accordingly, and roger that this may be a while in coming. In the interim, I need a workaround that I'm not smart enough to figure out.

I have confirmed that on my HTPro/8910, built-in code DVD/0630
(1) operates my DVD player and
(2) LEARNS and decodes as Kaseikyo-170.90:8.48 (as does the OEM remote).

According to devices.xls, DVD/630 is Sharp DVD 143.48, and uses protocol executor 00F8 in most remotes, OR 0171 in a few - including the HTPro/8910/9910.

If I build an upgrade (either RM or KM) for the HTPro using Kaseikyo-170.90:8.48, it generates a working upgrade that includes a large-ish Kaseikyo protocol upgrade (01C9).

If I build an upgrade with RM using SharpDVD:143.48, it calls for a protocol upgrade, as well (00F8).

If I build an upgrade in KM using SharpDVD:143.48, I get no protocol upgrade required (the upgrade also calls on 00F8).

According to Devices.xls, the (I hope I'm getting the terminology correct, here) executor for generating SharpDVD (the 170.90 "flavor") signals in the 8910 is (0171), whereas it is (00F8) in other remotes. I presume that is why RM tells me that I need a protocol upgrade for 00F8. Right?

So the KM upgrade (I presume) INCORRECTLY indicates that the 00F8 protocol upgrade is not required (??)

(I further notice in devices.xls that in the 8910, protocol executor 00F8 IS present, but for the 20.99 "flavor" of the protocol rather than the 170.90, which decodes, when learned, as Fujitsu - but that's another digression)

So, I presume I need to build my RM upgrade using the 0171 protocol ID (this ID is not available in KM). I select this protocol ID, and happily I see that I no longer require a protocol upgrade for my 8910, BUT ...

I don't know how to populate the data fields on the general tab. Whereas in the SharpDVD general tab, I only had a Main device and Sub-device - which I can figure out from a combination of the decodes and devices.xls - the PID 0171 slection gives me a series of fields to fill in:

Device 0 through 4,
Signal Style,
Bits/Device,
Bits/Command,
Cmd byte index

Bottom line - How do I build this upgrade in RM using protocol executor 0171 (precluding the need for a protocol upgrade) to mimic the built-in DVD/0630 Device code in my HTPro?

Someone should look at that executor 0171 and build a protocols.ini entry for Kaseikyo and/or SharpDVD.

I'm not sure when I might have time to do that.

Here's a workaround you can try until protocols.ini is updated:

Build the upgrade based on SharpDVD (00F8). Assuming you set it up as DVD/1630, you'll end up with Upgrade Code that looks like

Upgrade code 0 = 26 5E (DVD/1630) (RM v1.52b)
F8 ...
End

After you've entered all the functions and done all your button assignments, copy the Upgrade Code and paste it into IR's Devices tab. Before clicking OK in the Add dialog, change the first byte from F8 to 71 and check the Protocol > FF box. That changes the upgrade to use 0171 instead of 00F8.

Does anyone know if the fixed data and command parms are consistent with the 00F8 executor?
