RS 2117 Fav Scan button with Directv HR20
I'm trying to program my RS 2117 remote to work with the HR20. I'm using the rdmu file from the download section (DirecTV HR20 HD DVR.rmdu). Everything seems to work except for the 'list' button which I am trying to assign to the FAV/Scan button. I have several of the 2116/2117 remotes working with various tivos using the FAV/Scan button for my 'now playing' button. Why will this not work with the HR20 code? Does this have to do with the hacked vs. unhacked? I'm not sure but I guess I might have been using a hacked remote code with the Tivo? Is there any way to assign the 'list' function to the FAV / Scan button with the HR20 file?
Thanks in advance, Nick

Are you using the extender in those other 2116/2117s? I don't believe you can assign a keymove to Fav in the unextended remote.
Can you upload the IR file you're using (one in which it works and one in which it doesn't)?

No, I am not using an extender. Will I lose my learned functions if I load an extender?

In the one you claim that "works", you have nothing assigned to the FAV(SCAN) button, so I'm not sure what it is that "works" there.
As it is, I'm sorry, but I can't speculate what's going on, the Keymove in the HR20 file seems to be OK. Hopefully somebody else can spot what I cannot.

I haven't looked at the file but I'd guess it's got a function assigned to it in the built-in setup code.Capn Trips wrote:In the one you claim that "works", you have nothing assigned to the FAV(SCAN) button, so I'm not sure what it is that "works" there.
I think the 2117 is the same as most other JP1 remotes in that the Fav/Scan button can't be programmed via key move unless using the extender.

Having posted that I looked and see that there is nothing assigned to Scan/Fav, so now my guess is that the default built-in Scan/Fav behaviour of the remote itself is being used.Mark Pierson wrote:I haven't looked at the file but I'd guess it's got a function assigned to it in the built-in setup code.

I sort of thought that, but that button is not in the Keymap for ANY device type. If it cannot be programmed in a Device Upgrade, can it be programmed in a built-in Device Setup Code? I didn't think that was possible?Mark Pierson wrote:I haven't looked at the file but I'd guess it's got a function assigned to it in the built-in setup code.Capn Trips wrote:In the one you claim that "works", you have nothing assigned to the FAV(SCAN) button, so I'm not sure what it is that "works" there.
I believe that is the case also, yet RM and IR seemingly allow one to TRY to assign keymoves to that button (although KM does not). Hmmm..... a riddle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in an enigma....Mark Pierson wrote:I think the 2117 is the same as most other JP1 remotes in that the Fav/Scan button can't be programmed via key move unless using the extender.

If it really isn't OK to assign functions to the FAV(SCAN) key in RM or IR, it's just a matter of updating the RDF to reflect that fact.
Like this:
Only the unextended RDF should have this if the extender allows assigning functions to it.
Like this:
Code: Select all
"fav/scan":Scan{Fav}=$2C:MoveBind-- Greg

This conversation is beyond my level of jp1 knowledge. The remote file with the tivo uses the fav/scan button for the 'now playing' function on the tivo. I promise it works ... it is not just scanning through channels. Does it work because its built into the 'hacked' tivo mapping? Does anybody else use a directivo with a fav/scan button?
I guess I'm more confused now than before. So I guess the only way this will work with the HR20 is to use an extender? What about using the special protocol spreadsheet?
Thanks for everybody's help,
Nick

Unfortunately you're using a protocol upgrade so the Fav/Scan Programmer special protocol won't work.ntstevens wrote:What about using the special protocol spreadsheet?
Known Limitations:
* The key works with CBL, TV, or VCR devices ONLY.
* The key CANNOT be used in macros.
* The Advanced Code must be from the Setup Code of the
active device button.
* The protocol works ONLY if the original protocol is in ROM
and the Setup Code is in EEPROM.
* If another device button using the same protocol, the same
hex command will be mapped to the FAV/SCAN key of both.
* Only 1-byte protocols are supported.
Mark
Looking at the protocol code for the TiVo upgrade, it looks like FAV/SCAN support has been embedded in the protocol code. I don't understand how that works, but I can see the protocol code in KM change once I assign a function to fav/scan button. The device upgrade code does not change.
I never did figure out how KM does that in order to add that function to RM.
It appears that KM doesn't know how to do that for the DirecTV protocol.

OK, so I guess that leaves me with using an extender. If I use the extender, do I lose my existing learned codes? I'm basically just avoiding the extender because I was hoping I could simply replace the tivo with the HR20 code and leave everything else in place. I really want to use that fav/scan button, so I guess I can no longer avoid the extender
I noticed there are 3 different extenders for the 15-2117 ... is one better than the other? Basically I'm not looking to do anything different other than get that fav/scan button to work as my 'list' button. Everything else, I'll want to keep the same.
One last question, if I screw something up with the extender, can I just upload my old remote file to get back to my original remote configuration?
Thanks again for everybody's help!

Answers not in order:
(1) Ensure you save your IR file before loading a modified file using the extender. Then you can always recover back to that starting point.
(2) You will lose the ability to USE LEARNED SIGNALS WHILE THE EXTENDER IS LOADED. But you should not need to. You learn signals, decode them and build an upgrade, obviating the need for any of the learned signals long-term. If you have a new device to learn, you reset the remote to be unextended, do your learning and decoding, make your NEW upgrades and update your IR file with them and re-install your extender IR file.
(3) Extender 3, being the "newest" is likely the best to use. I don't recall all of the differences, but their readme's will explain that. Usually, each adds an additional flexibility that its predecessor may have lacked.
