When I try to do a Download from my 8811 OFA remote
I get the message "No data found in signature." I suspect I
did an Upload before doing an initial Download, thus storing the
default Radio Shack remote programming in my OFA.
How do I recover from this?

Try a MFR reset.

I have now tried this, but I still get the No Signature message.

I guess the question now is what is the best way to proceed? Should
I send it back for an Upgrade and ask them to restore the programming to factory settings? Or, should I be able to program it from scratch, putting my own devices into it?

Have you EVER had a successful communication with this remote? If not, try the various techniques routinely mentioned in the fora:
(1) With batteries - fresh,
(2) with batteries - weak,
(2a) with batteries - one reversed (simulates weak batteries),
(3) batteries removed

You did the 981 reset? Did the LED blink 4 times (might appear as 2 sets of 2 blinks)?

Yes. Although I cannot communicate with my XP machine, I can
and have with my older machine running ME. I may have inadvertently done an upload before doing a download, which I assume would have corrupted the original remote programming.

And, yes, I did try all the battery tricks... well, almost all. Never tried it with weak ones.

Yes, I did the 981 reset, although it look more like 2 blinks as I recall.

But pleas clarify for me what this reset is supposed to do. Am I to understand that a copy of the complete, factory programming is stored in the remote, so the current programming can be replaced with the original when the 981 reset is done?

Thanks.

The 981 function will reset the EEPROM where the user programming is stored. If by "factory programming" you are referring to all the setup codes listed in the user manual, those are stored in the ROM which is un-affected by the JP1 process.

If the 981 function worked, you would see 4 short blinks (2 sets of 2 blinks).
If it doesn't work, you would see 2 short blinks and 1 long one.

It is not possible to get just 2 blinks from a URC-8811 remote.

Thanks for the clarification.

I did the reste 981 again. It gives 2 flashes when I hold the Set key
for a few seconds, and then 2 sets of 2 when 9-8-1 sequence is entered.
So, it seems to be working. Also tried the Download again, and now it does NOT give the signature error, so all seems to be well, at
least on my WinME machine.

So, I think we are left to assume that you weren't really doing a 981 reset before, as it has indeed fixed the issue at hand. My best guess is that you were doing a 980 reset instead.

I don't think so because I had the file:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4057
right in front of me and I tried 2-3 times. But, doesn't really matter. Maybe my batteries finally weakened to the right level of discharge for the parallel interface to work. Very Happy

I have ordered a USB interface so I can move this work back to my main computer. While waiting, I may try to do an "upgrade" to see if I can do something simple, like control my DVD with the OFA.

Thanks for your help.
