(newbie) What is an extender?

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

(newbie) What is an extender?

Post by BRETTWIER »

Sorry everyone...
I'm not quite clear as to what an 'extender' is exactly and why I would want one for my JP1 remote. I have a Kameleon 6690, is there an extender available for this remote?
Thanks!

At the present, the JP1.2 URC-6690 kameleon hybrid does not have an extender. I am a JP1.2 extender specialist, and eventually I'll probably do an extender for this remote, unless someone beats me to it, but my next extender will be for the ComCast 1067 and it is going to be filling my time for several months.

Now why would you want one, hmmm. This was a concept that was very difficult for me to understand until I used one.

Feature Rich Equipment - One of the reasons I needed extenders was that my original remote had 56 buttons. The x-shift function of the extender lets me stack functions 3 deep on my JP1.2 buttons, so I have shift and double shift and can put my functions on buttons that make more sense.

Nested Macros - Nested macros can allow you to do complicated tasks in a macro.

HT - This kameleon won't lend itself well to HT processing, but you'll still probably want a temporary device selection, so that you can work with complicated macros.

Extra Keymove/macro space - This remote has a large learning memory that can be exploited for additional keymove/macro storage.

Special Protocols - Once you've used DSM and LKP you'll find it hard to give them up. I love my LKP's because they make my remote function much more intuitive. For example, I've got an LKP on my SAT button. If you press Sat you get control of the satelite button, but if you press and hold the SAT button, it changes the TV input to the Satelite mode.
ToadTogs and Multiplexing ususally come with an extender too. ToadTogs are meant to keep track of the status of your equipment, for me I use them to keep track of the status of the remote.
