I understand how to get my 9960B00 into the "wav receive" mode as above, but what is unclear to me is how do I position it relative to my PCs speakers?
How long does it remain ready to "listen"?
Is there a preferred volume, treble/bass settings? etc.
If the wav file I uploaded is a complete image, with the extender, how do I know if it has "taken"?
Anybody with details, please share.
(Otherwise, I'll just have to wait for my pogo adapter)

Read the extender documentation.
Each extender requires an activate step. My extenders use the first press of the power key in TV mode to activate. As the extender activates it should give a pretty clear visual feedback that something unusual is happening, hopefully the documentation makes all that clear.
I understand how to activate the extender, and it's not working, leading me to believe the remote is not accepting the wav file. That (among the other questions above) is my question - how can I tell "real time" whether a 9960 is accepting/has accepted a wav file update? The extender documentation indicates that when using JP1, you get a signature mismatch (as with all extenders) which you accept/ignore. Does this signature mismatch prevent uploading an extender to a 9960 via wav? Am I limited to only uploading wav files that use the baseline rdf?
(I guess I REALLY have to wait for my pogo adapter - c'mon Hovis! )

Oops! I forgot about that. Yes, a signature mismatch does prevent wav upgrade.
The Extender uses a different signature only to help people with multiple kinds of eeprom images on their PC keep them straight. There is no technical need for the signature difference other than that.
When people have used wav files for extenders in the past they needed to patch the extender and rename its associated RDF file (and hide the original rdf of that name) to get the extender signature to match what the remote expects. Then it should work.
Actually, I'm only trying the Kameleon because the 9960 finally looks like a form factor I would like (the early Kameleons were really aesthetically horrible), AND I got it for a very low price. My initial impression, however, matches that which the seasoned veterans here have routinely espoused - too distracting, hard to operate by feel only (and I want to watch my TV, not my remote), and blanked out buttons limit flexible programming to a great degree. So although I'll give it a good try, especially with the extender, right now I'm still partial to the 1994 and HTPro.

Can't argue with you there. I have the Kameleon 8040 an it's a pain when it flips into Menu mode and you have to reach all the way up for the "Screen" key to get back and access some other button. The 8040 has the "added bonus" that not all the buttons are mapped out accurately in KM or RM (such as "Exit" in KM and the Text keys in RM, but it's not too hard to get around it). I'm using my chunky but trusty 7562 for learning and I've ordered an 8910 for general use.
Meandering back to your original post, I don't have a 9960 (or a 42" plasma screen )but I have WAV-upgraded the 7562 (just to try it) and found that simply propping it up against the right speaker (and these are cheapy PC speakers) with treble and bass mid-way and volume set to annoying-in-the-same-room level (enough to be loud but not distort) worked fine. You can always reset if it fails and your pogo adapter will soon be there to rescue you, after all.
