Use of 25 pin parallel to USB lead

Post by GOGGS75 »

Hi,

I have a JP1 to 25 pin parallel cable at present and this worked fine with my old PC. Unfortunately my new PC does not have a parallel socket.

When investigating the options to solve this I can see that one option is to buy a JP1 to USB cable for around $30. I was hoping someone could advise me if this is the only option or if the other is to buy a 25 pin parallel to USB lead for around $1.

Thanks for any advice.

Parallel to USB adapters do not work with the JP1 (EEPROM) parallel interface. You need a dedicated JP1 (EEPROM) USB cable.

I recommend Tommy Tyler's personally.

Your only other option is to buy a parallel port card for your new PC, if that's cheaper.

I know that these parallel interfaces do a lot of "bit banging" as does my serial IRSA that I bought for JP1 work. My experience trying to use a serial card for my IRSA didn't work out at all. I'm suprised that these bit banging parallel interfaces will work through a card.

Tip: When creating an upgrade, always include ALL functions from the oem remote, even if you never plan on assigning them to a button. Complete function lists makes an upgrade more helpful to others.

I've never had a problem with my $15 parallel PCI card. You just have to make sure to check device manager so you get the address right in IR, as it will not be one of the standard ones.
