Thinking of upgrading a 8810w to a 9910 - What am I in for?

I like the way my 8810w currently works other than having to be a little dexterous when using it. The way my HT layout is the component rack is a ways from the TV so when I use the remote I have to make sure I point the remote at just the right angle between the rack and TV and from just the right spot on the couch. I've gotten used to it but it is a little difficult to convince guests to point the remote at nothing, and I sometimes miss myself. I need a another remote for a separate TV/DVD player so I was thinking using the 8810w for that and getting a 9910 for my HT system. It's been a while since I set up my remote, but I have everything just the way I like it. I cringe every time I have to get back into RM and IR to tweak the remote or add a new component - it's hard to remember all of the nuances. I'm using an extender, LKPs, pauses, macros, key moves, etc., and not looking forward to starting all over again. So, what would be the easiest way to get all functionality moved from the 8810w to the 9910? And do I need to do anything special to be able to use IR switch back and forth between 2 different remotes?

The bad news is that there is no way to directly import/transfer your macros, keymoves, and Special Protocol Functions from the 8810 IR file into the 9910. They are too different. So you will have to re-create them all from scratch in the IR file for the 9910.

What you need to do is:

(1) Modify each of your device upgrades in KM or RM from the 8810 to the 9910;
(2) Create a new IR file for the 9910;
(3) Add all of the modified device and protocol upgrades to this IR file;
(4) Convert that IR file into the extended IR file using the drop-down function in IR's "File" menu;
(5) Open a SECOND instance of IR side-by-side with the new one;
(6) Copy over your Macros, and SP functions one-by-one (presumably most of your keymoves would have been transferred with the various device upgrades.);
(7) test and tweak as necessary.

Alternatively, you could get a stand alone RF extender (like those Powermid pyramids that Radio Shack used to sell) and set those up so that you can point the remote at the TV and the Powermids will transport the signal over to your component rack.

Of course you can copy/paste hex codes, etc., but this will not save you much time, unless you're using custom mode name (7 bytes each).

I mean re-create them, entry by entry.

But if you are looking at what you had in the "left-hand" IR window, (displaying your 8810 file) and typing in the "right-hand" window (creating your 8910 file), then it might be a pretty quick and easy process

- in fact quicker than asking back and forth the same question a few times.

I've had this one for over a year in my 2116 and had no problems. Amazon sells it.

I just went through a similar process setting up an 8910 based on my "finely-tuned" 8811 setup controlling 7 devices, running the extender and using pause, LKP and DSM.

After getting the based extender into the 8910, I took about 1-1.5 hours using Capn's dual IR window approach to reimplement the setup. I'm not sure what the extender for the 9910 looks like, but the 8910 one was easy to translate from the 8811 extender.

You just have to free up sometime and just dive in

The URC-9910 and URC-8910 are the same remote, so they use the same extenders.
