onkyo remote with JP1???

Hi, Just bought a Onkyo tx-sr603x that comes with the onkyo rc-623m remote. When I went to put the batteries in there is something that looks darned near identical to a JP1 connection.

I took a pic, will email to anyone who want to see. There isnt a chance that this remote is programmable, is there. I know.. but it looks so much alike 6 pins, same surrounding hole shape as the JP1.

An easy way to tell is to try to download from the remote into IR and see if IR recognizes it. It may not recognize an rdf, but it should still communicate with it and give you a raw data dump, if it's JP1 compatible. (Of course, it looks like you would need a pogo adapter, like some use with their Kameleons, to make your connection)

Capn Trips, if it's what I think it is - he can't download because there's no connector. One wonders if it's jp1.

From a junk box, I just picked one Onkyo remote RC-588M in case it's jp1. It, too, has 6 flat little rectangles which seem to match jp1 spacing. But the lines are in different positions than on the picture in this thread. Looking at T-slot, pin 6 is in the upper right corner. No mention of jp1. There's a number 1007 in there. This remote has 77 buttons and a clicking switch to turn the backlight on. Three lines seem to go close together someplace, the rest I can't figure out.

I tried doing a picture, but it's too fuzzy.

If you have a pogo-pin adapter available, try using that to do a download. If not, try putting a spare 6-pin into the end of a JP1 cable and see if you can get that to work.

You could also open up the remote and see if the insides look like a JP1 remote. At a bare minimum for it to be a JP1 remote you'll need to find an EEPROM chip in there somewhere, where pins 5 and 6 of the EEPROM are connected to pins 4 and 6 of the 6-pin.

If it's a newer remote, it could be JP1.1 or JP1.2, in which case there wouldn't be an EEPROM.

If UEI made the remote (as opposed to just supplying the chip) you will find a reference to UEI or a URC-nnnn number on the PCB somewhere.

One of the batteries, I think, is only for the backlight which is controllable be a hardware switch. This remote has macros and learning.

The 6-pad in Liz's shot definitely looks like a JP1 connector.

Rob, can you, please, propose an orderely way of approaching it (is there a link someplace?).
If it talks to IR < v7, I guess I save RawData? Then play with it to look for signposts.
If it does not talk, do I try IR v7 (haven't downloaded it yet) - but I only have the standard jp1 going to parallel port.
How best to know if failure is due to it not being jp1 remote or being jp1.2 or problem of unsoldered contacts etc. Few hints would be handy just to get it started.

Do you have a volt meter?

Maybe it is worth measuring the voltage across a few pairs of pads (with batteries in the remote). I think we might be able to rule in/out JP1 or JP1.2 based on a few votage measurements.

It looks from the picture like the remote uses three batteries. Is that correct?

My guess is that the remote is not either JP1 or JP1.2, but that is little more than a guess.

The approach varies on what tools you have available. If it were me, I would probably have already opened up the remote by now which means I would already have a good idea if it was JP1 or JP1.x just by looking at the PCB.

The approach without opening the remote, I would use a pogo-pin adapter with a conventional JP1 cable to see if I could download from the remote.

If it failed to download, I would then use a pogo-pin adapter with a JP1.x cable to see if would download.

If you can't get a download using either method, it's probably not JP1 or JP1.x.

If you do get a download, the next step is decoding it, but we can cross that bridge if and when we get there.
