Hi everyone,
I have a Catalyst-48 remote (URC-48C20BJ1) from Universal Electronics it has a JP1.x socket on the back in the battery bay and I assume it uses JP1, but I can't find any information about whether is uses JP1 or JP1.2, etc. I got this remote about three years ago, and I don't have a manual with it.

Does anyone know which version of JP1 it uses? Or where I could find a manual?

I'm interested in starting to program the remote. I want to order a cable to do that with. I have an available printer port, serial port, and USB port on my computer. Do you have a recommendation about which of these it would be the better cable for me to buy?

Thanks for your help,

Is THIS the right manual? HERE are better instructions with all the advanced stuff the manual leaves out. Can you see any JP1 something text printed on the circuit board near the pins?

Also do a signature blink back using the Setup-983 command. Press and hold Setup for two blinks. Press 983. Press 1 for the first digit and count the blinks. Then press 2 for the second, etc. No blinks means zero. Post back with this code so we can tell if this remote is the same as another for which an RDF already exists.

Hi mdavej,
The the manual that you posted is the manual for my remote.

I inspected the circuit board of the remote all around the near the connector pins and there is no notation about JP1.

I did your signature blink test (using 983). The result is 1053. I also did the Code Blink Back test (990) from the other manual you posted. the result is 10047.

Thanks,

That's a new signature AFAIK. Forget about the 990 code. It's just one of the device codes, which doesn't really tell us anything. My guess, based on the age and similar models is that it's JP1.2. If so, Tommy Tyler's JP1.2/3 cable is what you need. I'm not certain, so hopefully another expert will weigh in on this thread. Once you get the right cable, post back, and someone should be able to help make a new RDF file so it will work with IR and RM.

Thanks mdavej. I'll wait for someone else to weigh in.

Your response has been very helpful.

I'm not sure waiting for another "weigh-in" will do you any good. It is most definitely a previously un-hacked remote. It is clearly a UEIC remote and as stated above likely a JP1.2.

Beyond that, the next steps would be for you to
(1) get a cable,
(2) download the remote's memory and
(3) upload it to the diagnosis area, for
(4) an expert to throw together a starter RDF for this remote, after which
(5) there will need to be some back-and-forth to tweak it into final form.

I got my new remote cable from Tommy and downloaded the remote memory to the file at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=5679

Would one of the experts please look at this file and create a starter RDF for me to start figuring out the RDF file for this remote.

Thanks,

Here's a starter RDF for you...
http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=5682

The first thing you should do is verify where the advance code section starts by programming an advanced code or keymove and see where it ends up.

Next you should try changing the VPT setting and see which bytes change.

One of the experts should help you get the button codes and keymap layouts.

Hi,
Has anyone heard from binky123 lately. He had been helping me via e-mail to create an RDF file for my Catalyst-48. Then, suddenly, last Sunday, between one e-mail and the next, his server stopped accepting e-mails. I haven't heard from him since.

RobMan,
Thanks for your response. I've been very busy with work and only able to work on this about two hours a week. binky123 has been helping me to figure out the key codes for the Catalyst-48, and I had not noticed your response to my last post. Sorry I didn't check sooner.

I have uploaded my latest version of the *.rdf at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=file&file_id=5724

I used the following procedure to perform the Code Blink Back test:
Code:

  1. Press and release the device button
  2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red led blinks twice
  3. Press 9-9-0
  4. Press 1, count the number of blinks.
  5. Press 2, count the number of blinks.
  6. Press 3, count the number of blinks.
  7. Press 4, count the number of blinks.
  8. Press 5, count the number of blinks.

This produced these values:
Code:

       1  2  3  4  5
  cbl  0  0  4  7  6
  aux  2  0  6  1  8
  vcr  2  0  0  6  0
  tv   1  0  0  4  7
  sat  0  0  3  9  2
  cd   3  0  0  3  2
  dvd  2  0  5  2  2
  tnr  3  1  0  2  3

I assume I need to change the values in the [DeviceButtons] section, but I'm unclear what the two columns of values mean and how I should calculate them. Do these relate to values in the [Settings] section?

It looks to me as if the advance code section starts at $E82B.

These are the changes I see when I change the VPT settings within ir.exe. I'm not sure that making these changes in ir is the correct way to check these values. Should I try to do it with the remote and then download the results to check how the values change? If so, how do I do that?

Code:

VPT Status AUX --> CBL
   OFF
      E808...09   7C 83 --> 7D 82
      E81D        01    --> 00

   TNR OFF   0b0-------

KeyMap Standard --> Alternate
   E808...09   7C 83 --> 5C A3
   E81B        41    --> 61

I don't know if this is important, but, when I look at the memory from the remote, there is one macro programmed at E82B. This macro ends at E841.

The rest of memory looks like:
Code:

E842...EBFF: FF FF FF ...                         (all FFs)
EC00...EC06: 41 50 52 00 00 00 00
EC07...EFFF: FF FF FF ...                         (all FFs)
F000...F005: F0 04 F0 04 00 00
F006...FBFF: FF FF FF ...                         (all FFs)

Thanks,

Thanks for the blink back codes. I've updated Robman's RDF to include that list and to match up the [devicebuttons] list and keycodes for the device buttons. The default device button list when the remote is reset seems to be CBL,TV,VCR,TNR,SAT,DVD,CD,AUX so I've kept this same order. Let me know if there are any corrections needed.

Hi guys,
First let me apologize for taking so long to get back to this. My work has kept me so busy for the last month, this is the first opportunity I've had to try to doing anything with this remote.Embarassed

What is the next thing I should do so that we can complete the RDF for the Catalyst 48.

I think we have a complete list of the key codes.

I'm not sure if the list of device codes is correct. I know that the device section of the RDF does not correspond to the order of the device keys on the remote. I don't know if that makes a difference. It would make it easier for me to use IR.exe if they did.

I'm interested in learning how to program the remote so I can use all the keys for at least one device. Right now every device mode has one or more keys that don't produce a signal. What do I need to do next to start programming the remote?

Also I would like to continue to find out the codes of the remote so we have a complete record in the RDF of all the remote's capabilities. If someone could help me with that I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Carl.

Not all buttons appear on all the device modes(TV,VCR,etc.) because some buttons(play,record on a TV) don't apply. You can use Keymoves to activate these other buttons.

I think the RDF is basically complete except for the keycodes of the device buttons. You can enter some setup codes via the remote and then download with IR.exe and see if it gets associated with the correct button. You can also create macros on the remote itself that include device buttons and then download with IR.exe to see if it matches.
