|
|
THIS SITE LAST UPDATED AUGUST 21, 2010.
New packaging of JP1.2/3 Interface and IR Widget.
USB Interface Cable for Flash Remotes (JP1.2 and JP1.3)
New package design!
My USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface cable allows you to program almost any JP1.2 or JP1.3 model remote control using free IR software available from this forum site. Free drivers can be downloaded that are compatible with all versions of Windows (including Vista64 and Win7) as well as Linus, Mac, and other operating systems. The unit includes a generous 42 inch cable terminated with a 6-pin connector tiny enough to pass through the smallest opening of any model remote control. Red and Green diagnostic LED indicators signal when the remote is communicating with the computer. The interface is ruggedly built, and warranted against defects in material or workmanship for one full year.
Drivers can be found at this FTDI site, and troubleshooting instructions can be found HERE.
The price is $29 plus shipping and handling ($5 within the U.S., $10 outside the U.S.
JP1 EEPROM Programming Adapter for Older Type JP1 (EEPROM) Remotes
This device is designed to allow you to program JP1 (EEPROM) remote controls with a JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface cable. A male 6-pin connector at one end mates with the interface cable, and a female 6-pin connector at the other end mates with the JP1 connector in the remote. It's internal microcomputer converts RS232 serial communications from your computer into I2C signals that are compatible with the EEPROM memory chip in your remote.
If you want to program a JP1 remote but do not already own a flash interface, you will need to purchase both a USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface Cable and a JP1 EEPROM Programming Adapter. The combination is a little more expensive than EEPROM Interface Cables were (when you could still find someone selling them), but the extra cost brings satisfaction of knowing that you'll be able to program remotes with almost any operating system available. And when your JP1 remote finally reaches the end of its life and has to be replaced by a newer JP1.2 or JP1.3 model, you will already have the flash interface cable you need to program the new remote. Instructions for using the Adapter can be found HERE .
The price of the Adapter alone is $19. Shipping and handling is included if purchased with an interface cable. If purchased separately, shipping and handling is $5 within the U.S., $10 outside the U.S.
IR Widget (Infrared Signal Recorder/Decoder)
The Widget is a remarkable device that lets you record and decode infrared signals from your remote control. Its fast optical sensor detects individual pulses from a remote's infrared LED, and sends the data to a PC for analysis. The PC produces a graphical picture of the signal, similar to that of a digital storage oscilloscope, and decodes it to show carrier frequency, protocol, device and key codes, and similar information needed for building new RDFs and protocols. Numerical data can be saved, imported, and exported. Graphical displays can be scaled, zoomed, sized, and otherwise manipulated extensively. Repetitions of signals and timing delays can be visualized and measured precisely.
New package design! The Widget is now supplied with a separate 1,2 meter cable. You can replace this if it wears out, and you can substitute longer or shorter USB extension cables if that's more convenient for your computer location. Or you can just plug it directly into the computer without a cable if that works for you.
The Widget uses the same driver as is used with the USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface, available HERE.
Download the latest version of the Widget operating program, IRScope, from HERE.
The Widget is easy to use. When you're ready to record a signal, click on the Capture button in the software display, point your remote at the tiny sensor window, and shoot. A flashing white LED confirms that data is being received.
There's almost no end to the uses you can make of the Widget, as well as the fun you can have with it. Use it to debug macros that don't do what you want them to. Measure exactly how much time delay you have inserted in a macro. Use it to troubleshoot interference problems where a device responds with the wrong action, or at the wrong time. Use it to compare the signals from a replacement remote with those of the original manufacturer's remote.
The Operating Instructions HERE provide additional details on the Widget, including instructions on how to download and install the free software. The instructions need a major update to cover all the new features of IRScope version 2.01, but they are close enough to give you a general idea. In the meantime, check THIS location for more information on new details.
The price for the USB IR Widget is the same as for an interface, $29 plus shipping and handling.
Small Adapter for Remotes with Reduced Size Opening in Battery Compartment
I originally developed this device when UEI began making remotes with openings in the battery compartment too small for the standard IDC connector. Now that the USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface has a very small connector, a separate adapter is no longer needed. I'm keeping it in the catalog in case anyone having an older model interface cable has a need for it, perhaps because they acquired a new remote with an opening too small for their cable connector.
The price is $10 plus shipping and handling. (No shipping cost if purchased with other items.)
Shipping and Handling
I try to keep your cost at an absolute minimum by shipping by ordinary first class mail. My charge of $5 within the continental US or $10 outside the continental US covers my expenses of packaging, travel to and from the post office, postage, filling out a customs form when necessary, and the fee PayPal charges me for each transaction. Shipping this way is usually very reliable, but it does not include any form of tracking or guaranteed delivery. In all of the shipments I have made, including many to foreign countries all over the world, only one or two have been lost. However, I cannot take full responsibility in the event a shipment is lost in the mail. I can furnish a copy of my receipt from the U.S. Post Office showing that I mailed it, but beyond that if you want guaranteed delivery, tracking, faster delivery, insurance, or any other kind of special handling you should examine the options available at www.usps.com under Products and Services/Mailing and Shipping. Then tell me if you want any special postal services added to your shipment so that I can include that expense in the total cost of your order. These services can be very expensive. For example, International Priority Mail adds $13 to your shipping cost, and International Express Mail adds $23.
I usually ship a couple of times each week, so most orders go out within a few days of PayPal notifying me that a payment has been received. Shipping times within the US are usually 3 to 5 working days. Shipping times overseas can run anywhere from 7 to 15 working days or more.
NOTE: You MUST give the the full and correct shipping address in your e-mail. I never use the "ship to" mailing address shown in the PayPal payment because it is so often the address of someone else making the payment, and can also be out of date.
How to Place an Order
I will confirm the total cost in step 2 below, but you can also estimate it yourself from the following price list:
.... USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface.................................................................$29
.... JP1 (EEPROM) Programming Adapter......................................................$19
.... USB IR Widget........................................................................................$29
.... Small Adapter.........................................................................................$10
.... Shipping and handling within continental US (First Class mail)................$5
.... Shipping and handling outside continental US (First Class mail)............$10
STEP 1: Send an e-mail to myjp1store (at) q (dot) com listing the item(s) you are interested in purchasing, and including your postal mailing address exactly as it should appear on the shipping package. This is not yet an order, and there is no commitment until you make a payment. Please don't ask me to select the type of interface you need. Check HERE for information and specifications on your remote, or post an inquiry.
STEP 2: I will send back an e-mail reply confirming the total price, and letting you know if there will be any delays because of temporary parts shortages. This also means I have all the information needed to complete your order. If you have not received this acknowledgement of your inquiry within 24 hours it may mean I did not receive it. Please try re-sending it, or send me a PM. If you send a PM, please include your e-mail address so I can reply to you directly. I will not reply by PM.
STEP 3: To actually place an order, send a payment to my PayPal account, which is: myjp1store (at) q (dot) com
(Sorry, but I am not set up to take checks, credit cards, postal money orders, or cash.)
STEP 4: I will send you an e-mail letting you know when the item has been shipped.
Comments and Feedback
If you have questions regarding any of these products you can send them to the store e-mail address, but please don't ask for advice on questions which the forum is better able to help you with than I can. Comments or feedback regarding your experiences with my products (positive or negative) can be posted to this thread and are very much appreciated by new members, who often rely on feedback from previous customers to decide if a vendor is dependable or his products reliable.

If only my last birthday had been as productive as yours, Tommy! Congrats on a great design.
One question though: Where is the blue LED? (I thought it was madatory that all new designs include a blue LED!) _________________ Mike England |

wow, very cool. Even though I have one of the earlier Thumb USB JP1.x interfaces, I think I'm going to want one of these. The issue with the older one (and the previous solution with the USB-serial cable) is that every time I unplug the USB the "computer" hangs and I have to restart it to get back to life. If this can survive plug-unplug it's worth it... _________________ this JP1 stuff is a sickness! |

Tommy's claim to fame was the Simple interface which was (and still is) touted as easy to build by just about anyone. And certainly, everything since has Tommy written all over it, even the improved version of the USB interface originally designed by Joe Cutler. _________________

I just got mine and it works perfect on Windows Vista running on my Mac in the Parallels VM. the previous version that Tommy had done always hung the VM when I unplugged it to the point where I had to reboot. the LED's are cool as well, you can see that stuff is happening while the transfer is going on.
Great job! I no longer have to dig my Windows laptop out when I'm working on JP1 remotes!

Does anyone know if this JP1.2/3 adapter will also work with plain old JP1? _________________ Kezzz |

Works perfectly with the 15-135. Tell Tommy you have a JP1.3 remote when you order. |
