USB Interface Cable for JP1.2 or JP1.3 (Flash) Remote
The USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface cable can be used to program any JP1.2 or JP1.3 model remote control. It uses a chip with Microsoft WHQL certified drivers that are compatible with all versions of Windows (including the dreaded Vista64 and Win7), as well as Linux and Mac operating systems. The remote plug easily fits the small 9mm x 11mm opening found in many newer model remotes. Red and Green diagnostic LEDs in the USB plug indicate when the interface is communicating with the remote during upload or download. The unit is ruggedly built, includes a generous 4-1/2 foot cable, and is warranted against defects in material or workmanship for one year. A driver for the interface can be downloaded from this FTDI site.
The price is $29 plus shipping and handling ($5 within the U.S., $10 outside the U.S.
USB Interface Cable for JP1 (EEPROM) Remotes
For over a year now I have offered two types of USB interface cables, one of which was made specifically for JP1 (EEPROM) remotes by using a Delcom chip. This type of remote is no longer being manufactured, and drivers for the Delcom chip are not currently available for newer Windows operating systems (our forum experts are trying to remedy that). Consequently, I am discontinuing the sale of USB JP1 (EEPROM) Interfaces effective immediately. However, to provide continued support for JP1 remotes I am adding a new product to my catalog, Kevin Timmerman's incredible JP1 EEPROM Programming Adapter.
When this tiny device is plugged into a JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface it effectively converts it into a JP1 (EEPROM Interface by intercepting RS232 serial communications to/from the interface and translating them into I2C communications for the EEPROM in the remote. The Adapter works with any type of flash interface, even one you built yourself. When your JP1 remote finally reaches the end of its life and has to be replaced by a newer JP1.2 or JP1.3 model, just unplug the Adapter and you are ready to program your new flash remote. Instructions for using the Adapter can be found HERE .
If you do not already own a flash interface you will need to purchase both a USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface and a JP1 EEPROM Programming Adapter. The combination is a little more expensive than the old Delcom JP1 interface, but the extra cost brings satisfaction of knowing that you'll be able to use it with almost any operating system out there. And your investment won't become obsolete when you upgrade to a flash remote in the future.
The price of the Adapter is $19. There is no shipping charge if purchased with an interface. If purchased separately, shipping and handling is $5 within the U.S., $10 outside the U.S.
Shipping and Handling
I usually ship a couple of times each week, so most orders go out within a few days of PayPal notifying me that a payment has been received. I ship by ordinary first class mail so that shipping costs are kept to an absolute minimum. My charge of $5 within the continental US and $10 outside the continental US covers my expenses of packaging, transportation to the post office, postage, and the fee PayPal charges me for your transaction. Unfortunately, first class mail does not provide tracking numbers or receipt verification. Shipping times within the US are usually 3 to 5 working days. Shipping times overseas can run anywhere from 7 to 15 working days or more. If you want faster speed, tracking, or insurance, it will cost considerably more. For example, International Priority Mail adds $12.95 to your shipping cost, and International Express Mail adds $23. Go HERE to learn more about which types of mail packages offer tracking and which do not, or other special handling.
Very often the "ship to" mailing address shown in the PayPal payment notification is not the same as that in your original e-mail to me. I disregard the PayPal shipping address completely, and always ship to the address you gave me in your original e-mail.
Small Adapter for Remotes with Reduced Size Opening in Battery Compartment
I originally developed this device when UEI began making remotes with openings in the battery compartment too small for the standard IDC connector. Now that the USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface has a very small connector, a separate adapter is no longer needed. I'm keeping it in the catalog in case anyone having an older model interface cable has a need for it, perhaps because they acquired a new remote with an opening too small for their cable connector.
The price is $10 plus shipping and handling. (No shipping cost if purchased with other items.)
Pogo Pin Probe for Remotes That Do Not Have JP1 Pins
Some JP1-compatible remotes are sold with mounting holes for the 6-pin connector, but no connector installed. Sometimes other components are also omitted, such as an EEPROM and maybe a jumper wire. If the pads for the connector are only accessible from the under-side of the circuit board, or if there are missing components, the only way to upgrade the remote is with a soldering iron. (This is always the preferred way if you can do it.) But sometimes there are pads that are accessible in one way or another, and you may be able to use the Pogo Pin Probe to contact them temporarily while uploading and downloading.
The probe plugs into the connector of your interface cable, and provides spring-loaded, gold-plated contacts that extend about 3/8 inch beyond the end of the connector. The resilliency of the probe pins makes it much, much easier to make contact with all six pads simultaneously than trying to use a rigid 6-pin header.
I guarantee the device to be free of any manufacturing defects, but I make no warranty as to whether you will be able to use it or even be able to reach conductive traces with it. Look closely at the situation with your particular remote and decide that for yourself.
The price is $15 plus shipping and handling. (No shipping cost if purchased with other items.)
IR Widget (Infrared Signal Recorder/Decoder)
The Widget is another ingenious device created by Kevin Timmerman, one of the JP1 founders. It plugs into a USB port and enables you to capture and display graphically everything your remote is saying. Its tiny probe sees each infrared LED pulse in a signal, and the PC gathers enough data to calculate carrier frequency and provide an easy-to-read graphical picture, drawn to scale, showing the ON and OFF patterns by which data is transmitted. The Widget also decodes the signals it captures and provides you with all the information you need for building RDFs or protocols.
After downloading the free software and driver (the same driver as is used with the USB JP1.2/3 (Flash) Interface) you'll find the Widget very simple to use. Just click on the Capture button when you're ready to record a signal, point your remote, and shoot. Use it to debug macros that don't do what you want them to. Measure exactly how much delay time you have inserted in a macro. Use it to troubleshoot interference problems where a device responds with the wrong action, or at the wrong time. Use it to compare the signals from a universal remote with those of the original OEM remote. Or just use it for the fun of learning more about how infrared remote controls work.
If you are thinking of buying a learning remote just to find out what those "mystery" signals are, this might be an alternative. Over the past six years I've designed at least three different systems for capturing and displaying the contents of infrared signals transmitted by a remote. Take my word for it, this tool is simpler, easier to use, and provides more information than any previously available device of this type at any price.
The operating instructions HERE have recently been revised to give you more information about the Widget and how to use it, including instructions on how to download and install the free software.
The price for the USB IR Widget is the same as for an interface, $29 plus shipping and handling.

Comments and Feedback
If you have questions regarding any of these products you can send them to the store e-mail address, but please don't ask for advice on questions which the forum is better able to help you with than I can. Comments or feedback regarding your experiences with my products (positive or negative) can be posted to this thread and are very much appreciated by new members, who often rely on feedback from previous customers to decide if a vendor is dependable or his products reliable.

If only my last birthday had been as productive as yours, Tommy! Congrats on a great design.
One question though: Where is the blue LED? (I thought it was madatory that all new designs include a blue LED!) _________________ Mike England |

wow, very cool. Even though I have one of the earlier Thumb USB JP1.x interfaces, I think I'm going to want one of these. The issue with the older one (and the previous solution with the USB-serial cable) is that every time I unplug the USB the "computer" hangs and I have to restart it to get back to life. If this can survive plug-unplug it's worth it... _________________ this JP1 stuff is a sickness! |

Tommy's claim to fame was the Simple interface which was (and still is) touted as easy to build by just about anyone. And certainly, everything since has Tommy written all over it, even the improved version of the USB interface originally designed by Joe Cutler. _________________

I just got mine and it works perfect on Windows Vista running on my Mac in the Parallels VM. the previous version that Tommy had done always hung the VM when I unplugged it to the point where I had to reboot. the LED's are cool as well, you can see that stuff is happening while the transfer is going on.
Great job! I no longer have to dig my Windows laptop out when I'm working on JP1 remotes!

Does anyone know if this JP1.2/3 adapter will also work with plain old JP1? _________________ Kezzz |

Works perfectly with the 15-135. Tell Tommy you have a JP1.3 remote when you order. |
