I just uploaded an article on "Hacking JP1 Remote Controls." I wrote the article because I thought the "JP1 - Just How Easy Is It" article leaves out a few things that makes this kind of difficult to understand at first.

The Wiki version of this doc is now online:

Thanks for writing it, I hope it helps some beginners. One comment though, you say to download IR 5.15 from the http://www.hifi-remote.com/files/tools/ address, whereas you should be telling them to download the current version of IR (which is currently 6.20, by the way) from the "Tools" folder here in the forums. Ie...

That is also the address that you should give people for the RDFs and Remote Master.

Sorry, I wrote this a while back.

Is there a way I can edit that, and replace my earlier upload?

You can edit, replace or delete ANY file that YOU have uploaded. Just not somebody ELSE's file.

I think I got all of the changes you mentioned and I uploaded the revised version. If you need me to do anything else, just let me know.

Suggestions:

1) With IR 6.2, You need to have gwiopm.sys in both your windows or system folder and the folder where IR resides. If you don't have gwiopm.sys in the same folder as IR, it terminates. If you don't have gwiopm.sys in your windows or system folder, you cannot communicate with the remote via serial or parallel. USB functionality will still be availabe for JP1 remotes if the USB drivers are installed.

2) You may also want to reference the JP1 Remotes Forum Index -> JP1 - Software forum rather than the file section. This forum has all the current release software as a "sticky".

3) You might also mention the beta version of IR that supports JP1.x remotes. Same procedure, but different interface and driver (jp12serial.dll).

I added how to copy gwiopm.sys, and referenced the Software forum.

I couldn't put anything in there about IR7 because I can't even get it to run on my computer. It just says "You must unzip the entire contents of the distribution file to a directory and run the program from that location. This program will now terminate."

What do you need to do differently for IR7? Copy "jp12serial.dll" instead of "gwiopm.sys" to "C:\windows\system32"?

I haven't installed an IR7 in a while (haven't even kept track of what has been posted). But last time I did, some things were simply missing and you needed to get those from IR6.

I don't think so.

Maybe copy gwiopm.sys from the IR6 directory to the IR7 directory.

IR7 is distributed as a change to the "normal" ir. So unzip IR into a folder, then unzip IR7 into that same folder.

That worked.

So I can make a reference to IR7, what does JP1.x support mean?

The new breed of UEI remotes (like the OFA URC-8820, etc) are not JP1 compatible, but they do have a 6-pin connector. We have now figured out how to talk to these new remotes. The first, short lived, breed of new remotes where called "JP1.1" and the current breed are called "JP1.2". We refer to these collectively as "JP1.x".

There are some OneForAll remotes that use an interface we (not OneForAll) call JP1.1

Their current remotes use an interface we call JP1.2

There is a cable design that works with both JP1.1 and JP1.2 and there is software that figures out whether it is talking to JP1.1 or JP1.2

JP1.x means either the cable or the software or both is designed for both JP1.1 and JP1.2

JP1 is significantly different from either JP1.1 or JP1.2. No cable works with JP1 and also with JP1.1 or JP1.2. Software works with all three only by having a seperate DLL for communication with JP1.x
