LEARNING new Codes...

I'm trying to simplify this as much as possible for myself.

I boought a remote from Rob (URC 6131-JP1 version), I will start to make my cable this weekend (missing connector for end of cable)
and have started to read and download the software to enable my remote.

Question, is there an EASY way to GRAB or learn IR codes using my PC and some software so that I can save time looking up codes on line?

I would assume I would have to make a IR sensor to DB?? adapter as well as software to read the information.

Is this possible, I tried to look in the file sections but to be honest, got lost as there are so many like files and such.

All I want to do is fire up a program, aim my OEM remote at the sensor hooked to my PC, and have it show me the code the button press sent and then I go to the spreadsheet program and enter this code in accordance to the button I want to use on my remote for that command.

Can it be done?

The easiest way is with a learning remote. Then download it with IR.exe and use the values to create an upgrade or keymove.

Yes, the easiest way is with a learning JP1 remote. You can pick up a URC-8810W at many Walmarts for under $20.

OK, forget EASY, this is what I want to do:

I HAVE a JP1 remote on it's way to me.

I want to READ IR CODES from OEM remotes to to program my URC 6131, this would be quicker for me than searching for codes, the right manufacture, the right CODE set and then having to download the codes then install ALL the info (when all I may need are one or two.) just to pic one or two.
Plus if I press the VOL + button, I can instantly map it to the VOL + on my remote. I'm just use to doing it this way with my learning remotes.

There isn't an easy PC-based solution for what you want to do. You can use things like WinIRC, LIRC, etc, to get IR signals and then using a variety of other non-JP1 software, you might be able to extract some useful information. There isn't any readily available IR hardware device for use with the PC and the JP1 software tools (Tommy Tyler's decoder comes close, but is beyond the scope and abilities of most user).

However, in my (our) humble opinion, the best tool for learning signals for use with JP1 is a JP1 learning remote, the IR.exe program, and the DecodeIR.dll.

As for your devices, between the upgrades available in the Files section, and the list of advanced codes on Rob's site, chances are you can find most everything you need.

I attached an IR receiver from a VCR to the parallel port on my PC (you can use the JP1 cable actually, you just have to turn off the output bit).
I wrote software to scope, and eventually to decode IR signals, providing hex codes or EFCs to plug into KM or IR.

This despite the fact that my URC6800 is a learning remote. I find my direct PC extraction more quicker and automatic.

Tommy Tyler invented a device that can be built for around $40 that you can use to capture signals using your PC and decode them, but as that's twice the cost of a URC-8811, the idea never really took off.

So I can buy this URC 8811 and LEARN the code, then read it via JP1 to see what it learned, copy it and transfer it to the remote of my choice? (URC-6131)

Correct. That is the common method of getting that type of information.
