RCA video source VH920

Post by planopete »

I have an Atlas 1056 OCAP 3303 black non learner with extenders and am trying to get the VH920 RCA Video Selector to work with it I downloaded the file to RM which used a 0920 setup code and protocol was RCA Combo (W/duration) protocol ID 01 43. I changed the duration from 5 to 10 to 15 to 20 and then 50 but nothing worked. I don't know what other info is required and any help is appreciated. Am not sure how to attach a copy of the summary page from IR if that would be helpful.

Did you paste the new Protocol Code into IR (and upload to the remote) after each change of the duration setting?

You shouldn't need to change the duration. The special duration protocol was added to make the signals work in macros, as you need to hold the button down to get a response from the unit.

I am using the VH920 myself and that upgrade works just fine for me.

RCA video source VH920

I couldn't find a way to post images so I sent rob a email, but won't do that any more. But I need help on how to do that.

First, Mark I did recopy into the to the protocol section each time I changed the duration. I was temped to change the hex bit in IR but I didn't, Rob, it is great that you have it working. Let me give a little background on my experience. Rob, if you are Rob Crowe than I am the guy trying to buy URC 7800's. Chris is switching remotes to the Atlas OCAP so I bought some as well. It has been at least 4 years since i worked with JP1 and then I was using KM with IR. I have never worked with extenders. Here is the history of what I tried. Originally I had the VCR assigned to a second dish receiver (Dish 301) so I loaded the RCA_VH920.txt file I got from the file section and loaded it to KM and the following showed up in KM

IMG 1

I then changed the remote to "Atlas OCAP URC-156 JP1.3 (Black) extender" . I was not sure what the note about S3C8 hacked combo meant but I copied both the Device Upgrade code: "Upgrade Code2 = 03 98 (Video Acc/0920) VH920 RCA Video Selector (RM v1.86)
01 43 00 30 08 81 7F 3A 5F 3A FF 3B DF 3A EF 3A
End"
and the Upgrade Protocol Code *** REQUIRED ***
"Upgrade protocol 0 = 01 43 (S3F80) RCA Combo (w/Duration) (RM v1.86)
28 60 02 8B 12 95 45 04 08 00 FA 03 D4 00 FA 01
E0 0F 8C 07 D0 07 BC 20 10 00 11 E6 0D 05 8D 01
46
End"
to IR. I then did a key move and assigned VCR A[Yellow] and VCR B[Blue] as follows:

IMG 2

But that did not work. I then changed the VCR button to use code 0920, it was originally set for the Dish 301 PVR:

IMG 3

But that didn't work either. I know that the duration change worked, because when I set it to 50, the VCR light stayed on for a long time. I know I could learn a code on the RCA unit, but every time we loose power I have to reprogram it, and besides this is a challange and will hopefully help me understand JP1 Better. :).
P.S. If there is a better way to present the IR and KM data better let me know. As always thanks in advance for any help.

It is easiest for all concerned when you upload files (KM (.txt) files, and/or IR (.ir or .txt) files and/or RM ).rmdu) files) to the diagnosis area. If there is more than one file, zip them together in a .zip file (not some weird .rar or other compressed file format thing) and upload THAT to the diagnosis area. You can find the diagnosis area by navigating to the ImageFile section and going to the Diagnosis Area. There you click on the Image link at the top of the page, follow the prompts to upload your file(s). Once you are complete, PLEASE remember to provide a link to the file(s) you just uploaded in this thread so someone can look at them.

We don't normally need to see images, but if you really think it would help, the following post explains how to load an image onto the web:

Then to include it in a post here, just put Image after it.

Well I figured out the problem. It revolves around the BIG DUH theory. After my so-in-law Chris took my IR file and operated a RCA V920 box that he had with a remote like mine, I checked mine, and DUH sure enough it still had the codes I programmed in some time ago. I had assumed (you know what that means :)) that turning the power off would erase the learned codes and that is what I did when I started this. After Chris said his worked, I left the RCA off all night and it still had the old codes this morning. It appears that it must be unplugged to forget the learned codes and when we lost house power that is when it failed to respond to the learned codes. Unfortunately the power cord is tangled up in a 500 pound entertainment center that requires to fullbacks to move, so for now I am going to learn the codes that it should use if we ever do loose power again. Or maybe in post-season when the Cowboys have a couple of free agents, I will unplug it myself to verify. Again thanks for the help.

The rca vh920 has default IR commands set to the input keys on the selector, they can never be lost. Its when you use a different remotes to teach these keys, those are the commands that can be lost when its unplugged.

The rca vh920 is a piece of junk, a so much better av selector was the radio shack 15-1987. Which I have two and they work great in macros and never lose the IR commands I have taught to it.

RCA vs RS 15-1978

Post by planopete »

Thanks for the info, I will check out the Radio Shack switch box. When I bought the RCA (many years ago) Radio Shack didn't have an IR unit. On the RCA, I think that it only looses the learned codes when it is unpluged, but the default codes are still there.
Thanks for all the responses and I will checkout posting files and images in the future.
I am also interested in learning more about the features of IR and more about extenders. I have read the "JP1-Just how easy is it" and the "Atlas/Atlas OCAP JP1.3 Extender readme". Are there other topic/articles that would be of benifit? Especially ones with programing examples. Thanks again.

I bought my RCA VH920 years ago from Glenn at http://www.auctioninsanity.com for very cheap. I bought it just to have a spare and because the proce was so good (I think it was $20). However, my video selector at the time was a Sima SVS4 that I paid about $110 for. Eventually, the capacitors in the Sima burned out. A friend fixed it for me and I continued using it for another couple of years, but then they burned out again, so this time I pulled it and swapped it out with the RCA which has been working just fine.
