Baffled in Burke!: Questions about Sony Protocols

Post by Capn Trips »

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): I'd like to undrestand how RM supports selecting the desired protocol/device for a particular function in two of the Sony Protocol Executors (Sony20, Sony Combo (12/20)

Long-winded background: I have foolishly volunteered to try to "iimprove" some of the [Notes] sections of Protocols.ini, in that some of the Protocol Help info in KM is occassionally better than the Notes available in RM.

The Sony Protocols in RM have me a little bit confused. Discounting the Sony Egg and Sony DSP protocols as standalone variants, I am looking at the other Sony family members: Sony 12/15, Sony20, Sony Combo (12/20) and Sony Combo (12/15/20).

As I understand them (from KM's Protocol Help the description of which corresponds with the Fields available on the KM Setup and Functions sheets), they work as follows:

Sony 12/15: Can combine up to TWO Sony12 and/or Sony15 devices;
Sony20: Can combine ONE Sony 20 device/subdevice with ONE Sony12 device;
Sony Combo 12/20: Can combine ONE Sony20 device/subdevice with ANY number of Sony12 devices;
Sony Combo (12/15/20): Can combine up to FOUR Sony20 SUB-devices for a SINGLE Sony20 device with ANY number of Sony12 and Sony15 devices.

Is that correct?

I see how to accomplish this in KM for each of these executors.

In RM, however, it only seems do-able for Sony 12/15 and for Sony Combo (12/15/20). RM seemingly does not have the required protocol or device-selection fields available on the functions page when working with Sony 20 or Sony Combo (12/20).

For Sony20, RM has you fill in the Sony20 device and subdevice and the Sony12 device on the Setup page, but there is no way to select between the two on the Functions page.

For Sony Combo (12/20) there are two confusing points:
First on the Setup page, there are fields for TWO Sony20 SUB-devices, whereas in KM one assigns a Main device and Sub-device on the Setup sheet;
Second, on the Functions page, there is no option to select which protocol (Sony12 or Sony20) you want to use, nor to assign the Sony12 device number nor select the Sony20 sub-device (if it is indeed to be selectable).

Is some of this stuff hidden "behind the scenes" in RM because the Sony rules don't permit certain combinations of OBCs and devices or what?

I need to understand how RM supports selecting the desired protocol/device for a particular function in those two Protocol Executors (Sony20, Sony Combo (12/20) so I can write a useful [Notes] entry.

Bump...

(I've done what damage I can to many notes in protocols.ini but would like to provide some clarification on these last two Sony's that I cannot figure out from the GUI)

Well, looks like support for the Sony20 and Sony 12/20 Combo protocols in incomplete. I'll add them to the todo list.
