Failed to program remote

Great forum, lots great info.

Remote: Cox Communications 7820
TV: AKAI 4225M

After browsing your forum I purchased a JP1.2 Serial Cable and downloaded IR7, Remote Master, all the RDF's. I Also downloaded a KM for a AKAI 4225M Plasma TV, KM was desgined for a URC 9910.

I tried to use the settings for the Already developed KM with my Cox Communications remote 7820. Everything seemed to work great, but the remote still does not control the TV. Here are the steps I took:

1. Imported custom KM into Remote Master v1.77 and made some changes to the keys then copied the ouput.

2. Using IR7 I connected the remote via JP1.2 serial cable and downloaded/saved current settings.

3. In the devices tab I selected add and pasted the information and selected Device ID as TV and Uploaded info to remote.

No errors were reported during this entire evolution, however when I use the remote it still does not control the TV, all other settings on the remote work great (CABLE & AUX).

I also tried the AKAI web site for additional info about the remote that comes with the TV. The only thing I found is alittle to technical for me

did rm generate a protocol upgrade too? If so you need paste that in also.

Did you upload your IR file to the diagnostics area? If so link to it please. If not post it to the location below.

I'm going to assume this not a learning remote so learning the codes is out of the question.

I question this step. You cannot change the device type of an upgrade in IR. You must use the Device Type that you selected in RM when you built the upgrade.

The easiest way to spot an error is for you to upload your RM file and IR file to the diagnostic area of the file section and someone will take a look.

Did you change the remote in RM to "Cox-URC-7820"? That might have given you a pop up message about "Lost Function Assignments". That just means the keys are named differently in the RDF of the two remotes (the URC-9910 that the upgrade file was created for, and your remote), so just go to the "Buttons" or "Layout" tab and reassigned them to the correct keys.

As others have already said, it would help if you uploaded the saved file from IR for us to look at.

BTW, the document you linked to at Akai's website says that the protocol used is NEC and device and subdevice number is 64 and 189 (what they call custom code, 40BD in hex). The numbers for the commands are in hex and are equivalent to "OBC" in RM. The upgrade file for Akai you downloaded matches that so it should work.

1. Yes I did change the remote in RM to COX-URC-7820.

2. Did not see a diagnostic tab in either RM (v1.77) or IR (7.0)

3. I selected Device type (TV) in RM, I am trying to setup cox remote so when I push the TV device button I can control the Akai TV Vol, Source arrows, etc.

4. No upgrade Protocol info was listed in RM it is blank so I did not copy the information over.

5. The Cox URC 7820 is not a learning remote, I do have a harmony remote (LCD) with USB capabilities, but I hate it and although it seems to be easier now to program, I figure once I figure out what I am doing wrong with the JP1 programming, I will be a lot happier.

How did you do this?

Did you use File -> Open then change "Files of type:" to "KeyMapMaster device upgrade files"? This would work.
Or did you copy the entire contents of the KM .txt file to the clipboard and use File -> Import for Clipboard? This would work.
Or did you copy just the device upgrade text from the KM .txt file and use Advanced -> Import Raw Upgrade...? This would work only if you correctly set the Remote to URC-8910, and the Device Type to TV in the Import Raw Upgrade dialog. After importing the raw upgrade, you would have to change the remote to COX URC-7820.

Judging from the fact that the function names don't match the function names in the original KM upgrade file, I don't think you did 1 or 2.

I think the correct upgrade text for you is

This is very unusual. It is possible that this could be caused by importing a RAW upgrade without setting the Remote field to match the remote for which the upgrade was intended.

I tried the upgrade on my remote and I don't think you have to correct upgrade file. I had assumed you used this file, but the signal being sent by the remote is not from that file. In any case the above file is not quite complete according to the document you linked to in Akai's website anyways. Try this file:

It includes the ir file you uploaded with the changes to the upgrade and revised Akai 4225M upgrade file, so you should be able to open the ir file in IR and upload it to your remote. Don't worry about the device type being set to "CBL" instead to "TV". I just did that to avoid all the keymoves needed if it was set to "TV".

The IR file kupakai sent worked great, had to add an additional key (Select), it didn't crossover. Also I think I figured out how to find the hex code using OBC.

Oddly enough, the code I needed for Select was the same in HEX & OBC

Not sure what OBC stands for, but Opposite Binary Code seems to fit since it seems to use reverse logic.

Is there more info on protocols and figuring out protocols? I have no idea how you figured out the protocol. I read briefly some of the info in the Forum, but don't understand how to create a protocol from scratch for a remote.

Rather than trying to reverse engineer the OBCs (Original Button Codes), etc, you should answer Greg's questions so we can figure out what you were doing wrong. Then, we can show you how to do it correctly and you'll be able to use our tools without needing to understand binary.

Yes I did performed option #1:

1. Downloaded a KM for a URC-9910 which was setup for a AKAI 4225M TV

2. Using RM v1.77 I opened the KM, Used file type KeyMapMaster Device file type. This loaded fine and I made some changes to the keys.

3. I then selected the Output tab in RM and clicked the Copy button.

4. I opened IR 7.0 and downlaoded my current remote (COX 7820) info into IR.

5. I selected the Device tab and selected ADD, then pasted the information copied from RM into the top window and selected TV as the device type.

6. I then uploaded the IR file to my COX remote.

This did not work, not sure if there was a problem with the KM file or if because the KM was configured for a URC-9910.

Once you've opened an upgrade file, regardless of whether you're using KM or RM, you need to change the selected remote to the one that you're trying to program. You didn't mention that you did that, so I'm assuming that you didn't. Neglecting to do that step will result in buttons performing the wrong functions.

Had you provided your RM file as requested (you only provided your IR), we would probably have spotted any error some time ago.
