After not having up or downloaded for several months, but dutifully upgrading all of the tools whenever they are updated, I tried uploading to my 8910 (simple parallel cable w/ 10kohm resistors) today from IR 7.0 (Beta) and received a pop-up dialog:
Quote:
Unable to intitiate JP1.2 interface
I tried this with various combinations of batteries and various settings of the EEPROM selections on the General Tab. Interface check gives me the same result. Various battery combinations yield the same result. I conducted an MFR reset and same result.

I removed IR 7.0 (Beta) and re-installed IR 6.20, and NOW I get a DIFFERENT pop-up dialog:
Quote:
Access violation at 004B9D98 in module 'ir.exe'. Write of address 00000006.

Tried all of the above (MFR rest, batteries in/out/1 reversed). Tried the same with my 1994, and the same pop-up occurs.

What have I screwed up and how do I unscrew it?! Embarassed

OK. I just did a "stupid" test and unplugged the cable and I get the same results as above. So obviously I need to figure out what's wrong with my cable.

Why, however, do I get different pop-ups for 6.20 and 7.0(Beta2)? Confused

Capn,

Try going to "interface" on the menu and click "parallel". Just click ok on the port dialog then "check interface" and finally up/download. I had to do this to get my JP1 cable to work when I had both cables plugged in. It kinda messes with the auto detect when you have two interfaces hooked up. The auto detect still has some bugs.

no one ever claimed it was a release candidate yet.

I do not have nor have ever had a JP1.x nor a JP1 USB cable. I have only ever used the JP1 Simple Parallel cable, so there should be no "confusion" regarding what cable I am trying to use. (And yes, I did try forcing the "parallel" setting - check interface gives me the same results as reported above for both 6.20 and 7.00 Beta)

UPDATE:

My cable is fine - it works from my laptop. It also USED to work from my Desktop. I have changed nothing on the desktop nor any settings in IR, but the Simple parallel cable doen't work with it (see the alerts I get).

Any suggestions from the experts?

Double-check to make sure gwiopm.sys is in the same folder as IR.

Also, make sure you don't have any printer drivers loaded that might be hogging the port on the desktop.

or in windows\system32 or in winnt\system32
I have a hunch it has to do with permissions and installation
OR
with real try to access protected memory area. Something's undefined.

Is gwiops.sys part of the new IR? I know the IR effort is geared to jp1.2, perhaps that broke jp1. I haven't tried it yet.
Capn Trips, do you see anything in the Application event log (control panel > admin tools > application events), heck maybe even in the system events. Try to see whom Microsoft is faulting and where. They always fault somebody Evil or Very Mad

Liz,

gwiopm.sys is part of IR for the JP1 part. IR 7+ beta works for both my JP1 and JP1.2 remotes.

Well, I back trying to solve this problem. Running IR 6.20 (I removed all traces of IR and reinstalled the newest non-Beta version).

gwiopm.sys is in the same folder as IR.exe

I still get a pop-up:
"Access violation at address 004B9D98 in module 'ir.exe'. Write of address 00000006"

and cannot upload or download. This time it's a real problem, since my laptop is at work, and I can't get at it until Monday. (I know it works from the laptop)

I checked the various event logs Liz refers to, but there is nothing there corresponding to the times of my attempted up/down-loads.

WAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! Crying or Very sad

Are you sure you have admin rights? Does the message only appear during up or downloading?

I'm sure I have admin rights and it appears(-ed) upon any attempted communication. HOWEVER.... since my last post, I installed IR 7Beta3 just to give it a try Rolling Eyes , and although the first time I tried it, it attempted to find a JP1.2 cable, when I forced the parallel port selection, it worked fine - go figure. Embarassed

As far as I know, gwiopm.sys is the only external file IR 6.2 uses. Make sure there aren't any other copies of it hiding on yor hard drive, especially in folders in your PATH.
