3m MP8650

Post by Steve Morehouse »

1. Device: 3m mp8650a
2. Type of device: lcd projector
3. Year: ? (old) (ser#70421857)
4. JP1 Remote model: ofa urc8910
5. JP1 user? y
6. Still have original remote? n
7. Checked the file section? y
8. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? y
9. Partially working setup code? TV/0751
10. Learning remote question? n

After looking at other posts, I see that some listed codes for this machine are deemed "seriously messed up" :
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5397

Some codes are identified with a Sharp protocol and some with Fujitsu protocol:
http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mb ... i?5827,1#6

These observations may explain the difficulty in finding working codes for this device.

I have used UEI’s TV code 0751 (Fujitsu protocol) to successfully provide SOME commands for my projector. The OneForAll Upgrade Service identifies ONLY TV code 0737 as appropriate for this projector. After downloading 0737, I find that my projector does not accept any of those commands.

This implies at least two incompatible OEM manufacturing runs for this device (also explaining why LAMP replacement models are dependent upon the device’s serial number!!)

Would it be possible to acquire at least two usable sets of codes for this device on this site?
I would also like these codes, as (a) I do not have the OEM remote, (b) the 0751 codes are only appropriate for a FEW functions on the device, and (c) the going price for the replacement OEM remote is now $150 --- and WHICH protocol does it use???. As we know, this device needs a remote. (A remote is even required to ENABLE the RS-232 port, in order to operate the unit WITHOUT the remote!!).

Thanks

I only glanced at the previous sources of info on this topic (enough to see I promised some follow up that I didn't provide, but not enough to see any clear source for the code set you want).

Starting just from the fact that TV/0751 partially works, we should be able to find the rest with some exchange of info and some experimentation.

We'll start out assuming you're correct that the Sharp vs. Fujitsu protocol results indicate incompatible OEM builds. But be aware that the Sharp protocol is a close relative of Denon protocol and Fujitsu protocol is a close relative of Denon-K protocol. Even though Denon and Denon-K are totally dissimilar protocols, there are many devices for which some commands are Denon and others are Denon-K. So it wouldn't be outside the bounds of common practice to have a device in which some commands are Sharp and others Fujitsu.

The next step is for you to give us a list of several (preferably all) commands from TV/0751 that you've found that do anything (and what they do if it is the wrong thing) as well as some commands from TV/0751 that do nothing. From that we can compare to previously posted examples of devices that partially fit TV/0751.

Worst case, you can create a few upgrades to cover all 256 OBC numbers, and test them and see which do what.

TV/0751 uses the Fujitsu protocol with a device code of 134.

I have replicated this code as a KM file here:
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=3337

Comparing the codes used in TV/0751 with those posted here, I would expect that the only buttons that work are power, vol down and mute. The ENTER button probably works as a volume up button.

If that accurately describes how the buttons work, I expect that the following upgrade will work for you:

TV/0751 is listed in the devices.xls spreadsheet as SharpDVD (either version 1 or 3) with the following parameters:
Protocol ID=00F8
Dev1=0
Dev2=134
Dev3=20.99
Dev4=00 (or 03) for version 1(or 3)

When LEARNED, this decodes as Fujitsu (as discussed in this thread)

I don't know what ANY of this means, but it's clearly related to the morass of problems with the SharpDVD/Kaseikyo/Fujitsu mess discussed in that thread.

Anyways, I'd just build an upgrade using the fujitsu protocol and device.subdevice 0.134 and test the OBCs to find which ones do what you want.

Ignore that, the "Sharp DVD" and "Fujitsu" protocols both use the same executor ($00F8) and in this case the signal doesn't follow the rules of "Sharp DVD", so the correct protocol is Fujitsu.

MP8650

Wow!

Thanks all for the quick responses.

Robman, the upgrade for "Fuji 134" was a great improvement over the standard "TV 0751". More buttons perform useful functions. I will tweek with it to get what I need (especially proper "Menu" and "Select" functions).
(The Fuji 134 "Menu" code calls up some sort of memory option on the projector, which i have no knowledge of ... yet!)

I will let you know how it goes.

To paraphrase Neil Armstrong: "This is a step in the right direction for me, a giant leap for all the MP8650 users back on planet Earth! "

Ha ha.

After experimenting, I have found all the useful OBC function codes for this projector. I have uploaded the KeymapMaster TXT file in the file section. The file name is 3M_MP8650_Fuji134xtra (expanded version of Robman's entry).
I have to say that each time I found a new function that worked I was astonished (and also elated)!
All the hardwork that went into the software used, (KeyMap Master, IR.exe) is immensely appreciated. "I see far because I stand on the shoulders of giants!"
I now have something I can use, and it is available for all (I continue to see these projectors for sale on the internet, now that they have passed their "useful" life).

Thanks.

I have also seen posts on the internet hoping to use the RS232 port in lieu of an IR remote control. (I was curious about this for myself.)

I have received info from 3M that may be of some help to others.

Some builds of the MP8650 ARE NOT RS232 capable. This includes mine (ser#70421857).

Others require using an easily made dongle AND THE IR REMOTE in order to switch the RS232 port from PC-Mouse-emulation mode to standard RS232 mode.

(I wonder if the people at 3M get tired of answering questions on such OLD equipment!!??)
