I just received my modified 6131 with a parallel cable. I opened IR.exe and keyed in codes for my audio receiver, directtv, tv, and tivo. The codes were changed and the remote worked. However, I have another device, a Govideo dvd recorder/vcr and I have gotten a few codes from One for All to try. However, most of these codes are not in the unmodified 6131 so using IR I input a few of these codes to test. Of course they didn't work but what was really strange was when I downloaded the codes from the remote the codes that I previously had uploaded into the remote were not there and were replaced by other codes (I imagine the factory installed codes). In any case my question is why did this happen? The other codes remained on the remote. The only thing I can think of is that the codes for my other devices were programmed in the remote initially by One for All. However, I would like to try these other codes.
Thanx
John

If you load a bad setup code into the remote using IR, the remote will overlay it with the default setup code for that button.
Check the file section to see if we already have an upgrade for this device.

OK - I went to the devices tap and entered dvd in the top window, vcr/dvd in the type window, 0744 in the setup window and nothing in the keymoves/macro window and got the error message "invalid character in input". However, when I don't enter anything in the top window I get the message "You have not entered the upgrade device bytes". If that is the error where would I get this information?
I'm sorry to ask probably these basic questions but I'm starting from scratch with this stuff.

You need to paste Device Upgrade code blocks from either KM or RM into the Devices tab in IR. You can't simply assign the device type and setup code there; that gets done on the General tab. As already pointed out, if the setup code doesn't exist in the remotes firmware or as an upgrade in EEPROM, the remote will change that device button back to the factory default code.

You've jumped over a pretty basic step here.
You normally do not enter any information manually into the devices tab of IR. The upgrade is pasted into the devices tab after copying it from KM or RM, and this will automatically fill in the various entries on the tab.
The upgrade itself is either created from scratch in KM or RM, or is loaded from an upgrade file from within those applications. You can find a large number of pre-built upgrade files in the JP1 files area of the JP1 Yahoo group.
You should also read JP1 For Beginners to get a better idea of the whole process.

OK - I got some Govideo codes from the codes but unfortunately none of them is for my machine. However, I did do a copy and paste from rm which worked in IR so at least I'm getting the hang of this. However, without a code that has already been created I think I'm at a dead end. I wonder if I can contact Govideo for help with a code?
Anyway, the jp1 for beginners mostly covers km which I cannot use.
Thanx for the help.

Have you tried JP1 - Just How Easy Is It? and the RM Updates to How Easy Is It?
