Returning to JP1 - USB driver troubles

Post by JamieGuy »

Hi all,

I'm a new returnee to the world of JP1. (Aside: I just looked and found some old posts I made six years ago!) My old URC6131n's have served me for years, but I have some new equipment now and wanted to update them.

As my new computer doesn't have a parallel port, I picked up one of Tommy Tyler's JP1.2/3 interfaces and a JP1 EEPROM adapter (beautiful workmanship btw!) and I'm trying to get back to business. But I'm having a problem getting the interface to work, and I hope you folks could help.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. When I run IR.exe and select "Driver Status" I get an error: "Delcom USB Error: Unable to find Delcom device driver."

I read that there were some troubles with 64-bit versions of Windows so I downloaded IR.exe 8.03 and the WdpAMD driver. But I have a couple questions:

1. The instructions in the WdpAMD package say "for 32-bit, download WdpIntel.zip, for 64-bit, download WdpAMD.zip". But later in the instructions it says "download either depending on your CPU manufacturer". I've got 64-bit, but it's Intel. Which do I download?

2. The instructions also say to open the device manager, and "Click the plus sign next to 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers'" followed by "Right click on 'USB IO Controller'." But I don't have an entry labelled that. I have two entries labelled "Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller" and eight (!) entries labelled "Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller". How can I tell which to select?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Wow, literally seconds after posting my request, I took another look at the device manager and found in the "Other Devices" section an entry labelled something like "FRxxx USB UART" (sorry, I can't remember the exact name). I tried adding the driver to that. Success!

Now when I go into IR.exe and do "Driver Status" it says "The Delcom USB driver is functioning properly," and the "JP1 USB" menu entry is checked (it was dim before). However, if I try to do "Check Interface" or "Download from Remote" I get an error saying "Access violation at address 6E7816C0. Read of address 6E7816C0." Any ideas?

Thanks again :)

To expand on Kevin's comment, the JP 1.2/1.3 cable uses a FTDI chip, and therefore needs drivers from FTDI, as linked in the instructions for the JP1 adapter.

A JP1 USB cable uses a Delcom chip. Some computers require the use of the WdpAMD or WpdIntel drivers for it. You don't have this JP1 interface cable and do not need these drivers.

I'll try to improve the Wdpxxxx instructions to make this point clear.

Thank you both for pointing me in the right direction. The instructions did the trick! I just successfully downloaded the data from my remote, and now I can get back to work!

Sorry I didn't find the documentation first. I was working from the JP1 for Beginners document, which is a little old, and I kinda had to wing it :)

Thanks again; this is why I love this community!
