Sony Bravia Series LCD TV Wide Mode EFC

Post by negeland »

I have a Sony KDL 46V2500 TV for which I'd like to be able to access wide mode with a device upgrade on a URC-8910. Unfortunately, while the various upgrade versions I've downloaded from the files section usually include EFC 164 as the function code for wide mode, button assignments of this EFC in KM will not select wide mode on the TV.

I have learned the function successfully on my 8910, a 15-1994 and also a recently acquired URC-10820. On each of these, the learned function works but the device upgrade function does not.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, have they perhaps found a solution. My ultimate objective is to be able to include this function on a remote with an installed extender.

What does the learned signal decode as?

Protocol, Device, Subdevice, OBC

Upload the learned IR file to the diagnosis area and provide a link to it here.

Also, usually if any KM/RM upgrade and/or IR file is giving you trouble, it is much more useful to upload the troublesome files to the diagnosis area and provide a link to them in your post. Then somebody can have a look and see if you are making some error.

A small clarification:

That advice refers to upgrades or IR files you created, not to the upgrades you downloaded from hifi-remote or other public download source. If you have trouble with any file you downloaded, it is helpful to include the URL of the file in your post.

So if the current issue is more complicated than it seems, you ought to provide the URL of at least one of the downloaded upgrades you tried and/or put your IR file containing the learned signal in the diagnosis area and post that URL.

But this issue seems too simple for that. All you need is the protocol, device, subdevice and obc from that learned signal. If you don't know what to do with those yourself, post them and someone will explain.

If you use THIS upgrade or one similar, it uses a the sony combo 12/15/20 protocol which must be added to the 8910. In this case wide is EFC 167, Protocol Sony15, Device 164, Subdevice none. It could be done with the Sony 12/15 protocol, which is built in to the 8910, but you'd be missing some other functions.

It's dangerous to refer to EFCs with Sony signals as the Sony executor is a mini-combo executor (ie, it combines two different device codes). The official UEI Sony setup codes (like TV/0000, 0101, 0111 and 1100) all have the first device code set to 1 and the second set to 164.

Assuming this is the combo that you were using when you tried EFC 164, that translates to OBC 59 under device code 164, which is the "Full, Normal/Full toggle".

The OBCs that I have for the various "wide" functions are (all from device code 164):

50 (EFC 040) Zoom, Wide/Zoom toggle
61 (EFC 167) Wide Mode, Screen Mode, Format, Aspect, 16:9 (see note)
66 (EFC 024) Wide

Thanks for all the responses. All were helpful.
After some sorting out my thoughts, I tried the upgrade suggested by mdave in his quote.

I loaded Dave's suggested upgrade into RM, set the RDF file for my 10820 first, and then modified button selections to match those in my KM upgrade.

After some tweaking and testing, the Wide Mode Toggle (Normal, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom) works fine on any button I chose (ended up on Pip Move). The same process was also successful on my 8910.

It appears that the Sony Combo (12/15/20) protocol is required to get the job done. It is resident in the 10820 but I had to add it in to the 8910.

Thanks again for the help.
