I don't think there's anything you could load in via .wav file that would cause problems that bad. I'm sure there is some combination of steps that will factory reset it, though if you're accurate about "completely unresponsive" it may take more than the normal sequence.

But first, I wonder about a couple battery issues:

1) Maybe a battery has gone bad, which often means it repeatedly provides a moment of power when you connect it but then stops (fitting the symptoms you describe). Have you tried new batteries.

2) Just remove an replace a battery usually doesn't properly restart the cpu inside the remote. You usually need to remove a battery, press a button while the battery is out, and then replace it.

Another trick is to short the two battery terminals together.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I got some new batteries and tried the remote again.
The TV button blinks twice when new batteries are inserted and subsequent keypresses does nothing (i.e. light any buttons)...

Yes, but did you try pressing a button with the batteries out, as per johnsfine suggestion 2)? If you didn't, thentry it; if you did, then tell us!

As a long shot, try (with the batteries still in) pressing 10 and AV simultaneously and holding it for 4 seconds (and then try a few other combinations if that doesn't work).

Yes, I followed taking the battery out and pressing a few keys and replacing the battery.

Yes, I tried shorting (don't know how to do this - I just reversed one battery).

Yes, I tried holding 10 + AV for 4 secs or more.

None of the above worked.

I will try calling OFA tomorrow and see if they have a reset trick...

Ah, well; sorry it's not working for you. By "shorting" I think the Robman means taking the batteries out and connecting the two battery terminals together.

Question for any expert: incidentally (and I have no idea if this works or why it would work if it did), I tried shorting all the JP1 pins together on my 7552 and the LCD backlight came on and TV button blinked a couple of times. Just a fancy light show or would this knock it into reset?

There are four battery terminals (two for each battery). I assume I just connect -ve to -ve or +ve to +ve? Anyway I've done both and still no joy.

I tried this as well. My remote lit up all the back-lit buttons - still no joy.

I have just called OFA and spoke to an assistant who said I can reset the remote without the Magic button working. Bugger, as non of the keys work except the TV flashing twice when batteries are inserted.

She suggest that I leave the batteries out for 1/2 a day to see if I can get a (Magic) response. Otherwise it is fsck'ed...

The battery has been out for more than 1/2 a day, and I tried to get a response and still nothing.

Oh no! Me again!

I've gone an bought a JP1 cable of syncmaster108 (of eBay).

I've connected the (broke) remote to the parallel interface and loaded up the remote's 'profile'. I then upload to the remote, which makes the TV button flash twice (like if I had removed and replaced the battery) and not much else happens.

Anyone got an idea how I can reset (rescue) my remote using IR and hte JP1 cable?

(I got a feeling the remote packed in and it was a coincident that I was trying to update it via the modem.)

What did you upload to the remote? Could you try a download from the remote, post the IR file to the Diagnosis Area and then post here with a link to that file plus as much information as you can such as exact model number of remote (see inside battery cover)?

Here is the IR file downloaded from my broken remote:
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=2725

I just uploaded a blank IR configuration. I started IR. I did File->New->Select. Selected URC-7550_7552_7560_7562 One For All (EBV0EB ... can't read the rest) and the uploaded to the remote... (I've done the same for the other two entries for the 7562 and had the same results). Downloading the IR file drom the remote always give the same file...

Try downloading this IR file and uploading it to your remote. Any luck with either the TV or the Humax? Any response at all from remote?

broke remote fixed!

Post by son_t »

Hey! I don't actually know what has happened but my MAGIC button is working again! Hurrah!

I did what you suggested. Downloaded and opened the document in IR. It complained about 'no data found in signature' but I went ahead, and it asked me for the remote model (I chose URC-7560_7562 Extender), it then complained about bad checksums - I said no to replacing existing data with fixed data, it complained about list out of bounds. IR showed a lot of errors for the various device buttons. I uploaded to the remote and now I get button responses when I press them!

Now that I have my MAGIC button back I can do a reset and then use IR to program what I wanted to do in the first place...

I am at work so I can't test it on the TV, etc, so will have to wait until later...

Thanks underquark! A fellow Scot! I live in Cupar, Fife although not a true Scot (yet)!

One caveat.

After you have reset your remote, you should download a blank IR file from it, and see what rdf IR chooses. THAT is the rdf you should use. If it does not choose either the EBV0EBV0 (for the 7560-B00) or the EBV0EBV1 (7560) rdf's, then you may have a NEW version of the 7560. It's conceivable that it may select the EM60EM60 rdf, corresponding to the 7562-B01, also.

The extender rdf (EBX0EBV0) will ALWAYS have a conflict the first time you try to upload to the remote, and is for the "next level" of your JP1 experience. :D

Reset and go?

Post by son_t »

I have just reset the remote: Magic (**) 981.

I used IR to download the settings. It has chosen this RDF:

URC-7550 Black 5 Device/7552 Silver 5 Device/7560-B01 Black 6 Device/7562 Silver 6 Device One for All

I believe that is the EBV0EB1? What does this mean then? The code inside the battery cover says URC-7562 B00 (C F9X CF-C0C9 DC).

So what is the next level?

I was trying to program the remote to control these devices (before I was rudely interupted by the remote going into 'no response' mode):

1 Panasonic TV, 2 Yamaha AV reciever, 3 Humax PVR, 4 No name Xbox, 5 Metronic Sat, 6 Philips CD player.

I know there are no codes for the Humax yet (but aldaweb submitted this https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload ... le_id=2687 file).

My plan was to upgrade my remote via the OFA site with wav's, delete the unwanted codes using the cable and IR and install the Humax controls from above... Is this the simplest way without getting 'nitty-gritty' with this JP1 business?
