A wiki?

I was wondering, if there had been any thought into perhaps forming a wiki section for all the documentation? That might spur more documentation for beginners, as other beginners like myself, slowly get a handle on all the things JP1 remotes can do.

I noticed recently that someone has created a stub page for JP1 over at Wiki.

I was looking at Wikia.com a bit. They host for free, as long as the content is under the GFDL. Also they have the Scratchpad section to start a wiki immediately, without the whole approval process the formal part of the site has.

How about this: How many might be interesting in participating in a wiki for JP1 docs, howtos, macro recipes, etc?

For JP1, something like Wikibook is best. The standard Wikipedia is not designed for technical stuff like this. Wikibook is designed for large subjects that can be broken into chapters.

I created one for the Motorola DCT-64xx/34xx DVR's:

I think there's still a place for a general introduction to JP1 over in the main Wikipedia site, which should be designed to give someone unfamiliar with the process an idea of what it's all about.

The Wikipedia would be a basic description of what JP1 is.

To use the Motorola DVR as an example, if you search Wikipedia for the model numbers (DCT3412, DCT6412, etc..) you get a short entry, with a link to the Wikibook.

I agree that a lot of this documentation could be moved to a Wiki. We could use Wikia or Wikibooks, though the latter might not be right for this kind of varied articles. See http://audreyhacking.com for something similar.

I also have a hosted domain with wiki software and would be willing to host a wiki for the JP1 indefinitely. Seriously. Check out my Miata wiki at http://miata.fosketts.net and my JD Salinger wiki at http://salinger.org. I could easily create http://jp1.fosketts.net as a wiki for any and all JP1 documentation and discussion. I'm serious.

I've not posted here since my 7800 has been working for a LONG time, but I was active like 5 years ago. Now that the old Cinema 7 is on its last legs I'm getting an 8910 as a replacement.

Thoughts?

This is exactly why I think we need a wiki. Think what we could do with our JP1 documentation if we could all contribute and edit it!

I'll repeat my offer: I will host a wiki on my own paid hosted server for the JP1 documents. All I need is agreement that this is a good thing and permission to dump in all the docs we have here that are relevant...

You don't need permission from any of us in order for you to host a site with helpful JP1 info, even if it contains docs copied from here, so if you want to give it a shot, go for it.

I'm curious though why you would want to host it yourself rather than set it up on the main Wiki site.

Let me clarify:

I don't want to run off and create some parallel structure to what we already have (and value) here in the forum if people don't want it. I think it would be helpful, but it's not just me here...

As for copying info - I wasn't sure about the copyright status and such. I don't want anyone getting bent out of shape!

And as for hosting, the problem is that Wikibooks expects a full length article for a single subject. I am envisioning something more like lostpedia or something with lots of crosslinks and details about all things JP1-related. So I figured a dedicated wiki would be the right direction...

I'll give it a shot. Let me know what you think!

Primarily what we have here are the tools themselves and the upgrades. The "help" docs have always lagged behind because we don't always have time to write them, so if you were to make it your primary focus to develop a site that attempts to explain all the crazy stuff that we do here, I'm all for it. If you can get a bunch of people here to help you do it, even better.

Getting back to an older thread, if anyone is interested, I started a small wiki at Wikia. It's got some basics starter info. I hope to expand it a bit more, as I've been getting the itch to tweak my remotes even further.
