onkyo remote with JP1???

Well, Since I started this I went head and popped open my remote. Took a high res pic and posted it to the file section:

Note that the 32 pic SOIC on the upper right reads UEIC so I am pretty sure it is a UEI based remote even t brand says GODO. Sorry I forgot to write down the chip number.
So then it is probably JP something.

How did you pop it open? The one I have has a bunch of the tiniest star-shaped screws.
It looks like pin 3 is not connected. I'm assuming this pin layout with leg of "T" down, under 1,3,5.

I cannot get any readings pin to pin
I can get readings between the negative battery springs to pins 1,4,5,6. Is the method valid?
In case it is, the volts are proportional to the number of batteries in series, roughly 1, 2.2, 3.3 volts with pin 5 being always about 1v less.
Nothing on pin 2. Ever.
Pin 3 measured against the positive battery terminal does nothing. Pin 3 is ground in jp1 isn't it?
I suspect the whole thing is doomed unless ground's there.
The speculation will be over when I get the pogo jobs. This isn't a JP1 remote, but if the chip says "UEI" there's a very good chance that it's either JP1.1 or JP1.2.
Tell ya what Liz, why don't you mail it to me and I'll solder a connector onto it for you, plus I'll tell you for sure what it is.

I did get the screws out. Failed to open it even using Tommy's credit cards trick. I don't want to break it, yet I'm dying to see the interior. If it's jp-anything, I think it's a very cool remote.

The number in there is 1002, mine (RC-588M)shows 1007 and the connections look different. I may need better glasses, but I don't see UEI anywhere. Reminiscent of "Where is Waldo"

Let me see, in a day or two when I get the pogo adapter, where that takes me. I may well take you up on the wonderful offer.

One thing that does have me curious is what was supposed to go in that spot on the square area right of the UEI chip. Was a through hole device too. two pins.
One last note about this remote is that it was originally designed to be backlit there are spots on the keypad side for surface mount LEDS and on the component side there are spots for the current limiting resistors. Might be neat to install a bunch of leds to get this thing lit!

Hijacking a macona's thread by me was not a good idea. Rob, is it clear that we're talking about two different remotes?
My update on RC-588M remote : Can't download through the Samtec pogo pins. Total silence
I looked at the remote manual on the Onkyo site. Few features:
1. There's no Setup button. Standby is used together with holding a
device key to be followed by 4-digit setup code.
2. Setup cannot be changed for the Receiver device, as that's assigned
to the particular Onkyo receiver
3. Three macro keys may be assigned to each device mode. DSM?
4. There's room for, I'm not kidding, 150 learned commands. Does that imply 6K eeprom or flash?
5. Volume keys are punched through to receiver, and I think a bunch of
channel type keys are punched through to TV and I don't think you can
change that.
6. Keymoves are allowed, I didn't get details.
7. Even without light enabled, pressing any key lights up the current
device key. It times out just as the jp1 remotes do. The light switch
also times out. The only thing that never lights up is a joystick-like thingie in the middle.

The remote is here. There's an EEPROM onboard (and a big one too, it's 24C128, which is 16k bytes) and pins 5 & 6 are connected to JP1 pins 4 and 6, which tends to imply that it's JP1, but pin 3 isn't connected to ground, which is unusual.
However, I can't get IR to read from it, which might be because of the size of the EEPROM.

Wow! so you got it opened.
16k eeprom - imagine the possibilities for learning couple whole remotes
Now 150 lerned signals almost looks tiny, does it not?
Questions
Can IR be rigged to see 16K or part thereof?
Can some microwires be attached to link ground to proper pins? I imagine you might have done it, seeing that you tried IR already. Just curious.

I haven't tried modding the remote yet, all I've done is open it up to see what's inside (using a cellphone screw-driver - just like macona) and then I tried downloading it using a pogo-pin adapter. I also checked where some of the pads where connected to.
I'm on vacation next week, so I probably won't have time to poke around much more with this until after then.
