Next Generation Remote Extender - Base Unit Died

I have 2x Next Generation Remote Extender base units. One of them died on me yesterday.

I found that TC4 had shorted. I assume TC4 was a tantalum electrolytic 100pf SMT capacitor, and it looked like it was being used as an input smoother for the voltage regulator. I replaced it with a standard 50V ...

It was big. The 9910 was big as well.

If the DB uses some oddball IR frequency, the UFO won't pick it up.

I can't tell you how the 9910 would work for you. My only experience with an OFA RF remote was the 9900, and I hated it.

I regret that the UFO seems not to work for me at all. On the URC 7950 programmed for a Samsung TV and a Dreambox tuner it responds in TV mode, but not in Dreambox mode. Direct IR operation does of course work the way it should.

Can the problem be anything else than the transmitter failing to pick ...

Read my discussion of what I had to do to my NextGen system. It's in the hardware forum.

I found that out-of-the-box, the UFO-shaped receiver sucks. You need to convert it to an "eye" system. You can do this by taking the included eye, getting a few IR diodes, and soldering them in parallel.

I ...

My vote goes like my $$$'s did. I spent 6 months researching the perfect TV for my needs. I bought a Panasonic 50PZ77U plasma.

The remote uses the Panasonic protocol. If you want to know what the remote can do, look here .

It can't do discrete aspect ratios, but it CAN do discrete inputs. That is ...

That's kind of expensive and it's just IR. I spent $70 and got a pair of those Next Generation Remote Extenders that work on RF.

I'm sure you can find a place that will ship one overseas.

There are some easy mods you can do to them to make them equal to or better than that Niles Audio system.

How much is a Cinema 7 (7800) worth?

I'm thinking of offering my Cinema 7 up for sale.

How much is it worth?

Ok... One hiccup.

The IR signal from the 56k unit interferes with the IR signal coming from my remote. I cannot control my Scientific Atlanta cable box if I point the remote at it.

I've had to put tape over the IR LEDs on the remote.

I finally got everything set up, and the results are positive .

If I had just taken the thing out of the box and used it, I would have been severely disappointed, especially for the money I spent. The IR coverage angle and maximum IR range made the unit difficult to situate.

So... I voided the ...

More disappointment

The max range from the UFO to my receiver is 15 feet. When I look at the IR LEDs through a digital camera, they look dim (as opposed to my remote's brilliant glare.)

What this means is that I can't put the UFO up in the corner across the room like I could with the RF-enabled ...

John (or anyone),

What is the typical Vf for IR LEDs? The ones included in the receiver are 1V.

I am currently modifying the UFO-shaped receiver. I have removed the IR LEDs from the PWA and have installed them to the ends of two 6' cables. This gives me 3 IR "eyes" that I can position around ...

Re: Next Generation Remote Extenders - Now in my remote!

I finally had a chance to test the device out.

Setting A did indeed work on my SA8300HDC, and setting B worked on everything else. Setting C apparently toggles back and forth between A and B, but it does not work for "A" devices.

Is it great? Not out of the box.

I think the design of the UFO ...

After 18 hours... I still don't have a charged battery.

It seems that the 2/3AAA terminals on the receiver (used to charge the cell) didn't make good contact with the cell. I corrected this and will now wait another day for a full charge.

I should have some functionality info tonight.

Next Generation Remote Extenders - Now in my remote!

You may remember that I was going to get two of those remote extenders mentioned in the title.

I got them today.

What these things do is detect the RF interference that your remote puts out when it drives the IR diode. They are shaped like a dummy battery.

I'm currently charging a battery that ...
