  1. Is there a home page for JP1 related information?

The main web site for JP1 info is Rob Crowe’s page at http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1.

Many files/links/etc are also available from the mailing list homepage at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1.

Be sure to also check out Rob’s general UEI-based remote info web page at http://www.hifi-remote.com/.

There is also a general discussion forum on UEI-based remotes at Remote Central http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-one4all/list.cgi.

  2. Is there a mailing list for JP1 related information?

New JP1 discussions currently take place in the JP1 Forums.

However much useful information is still available in the mailing list archive at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1.

The Yahoo site is still used for file storage.

  3. What happened to the old FAQ?

The old FAQ had become quite outdated, so it was decided to start over with an easier-to-update FAQ. However you can still access the old version at http://home.austin.rr.com/xris/jp1/jp1FAQ_old.htm.

  4. What remotes can be used with the JP1 interface?

Alain Berguerand maintains a list of JP1 compatible remotes, as well as their current level of support at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jp1/files/Miscellaneous/RemoteChart.htm.

Note that you will need to join the JP1 Yahoo group to access this file.

  5. What is the best JP1 Remote?

    From Mark Pierson:

We get many questions asking what the best JP1 remote is. The answer is simply, there isn't one!

Defining the best remote boils down to a large amount of personal preference. Do you prefer hard buttons or a touchscreen? Is an LCD display something you'd prefer? Do you want or need an RF command center? It's sort of like asking what the best car is... or the best PC, or TV, place to live, etc, etc, etc.

In the JP1 world, I think it's better to look at a remote in terms of features, functionality, and support. In other words, does it have enough buttons (and are they programmable) to suit my needs? Can it do all the neat JP1 tricks like Key Moves, Macros, Learning, etc? Is it customizable through an available extender? How many JP1'ers are using it?

Right now, the most popular available U.S. remotes are:

    RadioShack 15-2116 w/LCD
RadioShack 15-2117 w/LCD and RF Command Center
    One-for-All URC-8811
    One-for-All URC-8810w (available only at Wal-Mart)

There are numerous other models still available as well. Many of the older (no longer available) models can be found at places like eBay, etc.

So remember, a question of "what is the best JP1 remote?" will likely give you several different answers, and there is no right or wrong one!

  6. Where can I learn more about JP1 in general?

Rob Crowe has some great info on this at http://www.hifi-remote.com/infrared.

  7. Why is there still data in my memory dump after doing a 981 factory reset?

When you do a reset it doesn't really remove the data, it just resets the pointers so the data is in effect "invisible" to the remote. You can download a ‘virgin’ memory dump from the files section of the discussion group to upload to your remote if you REALLY want to clear out the EEPROM.

  8. If I use XXXX upgrade with my YYYY remote and my ZZZZ hardware, will I be able to do XYZ?

Please do not ask questions like this. Try it, and then report the results back to the group.

  9. Can you map a function to the "Scan" button as part of an upgrade or using advanced codes?

There is actually is a way you can program a function to the fav/scan button. Nicola created a special protocol that can be used to program a function to this button, but there are quite a few conditions that have to be met before it will work, one of which is that the protocol being used has to be a built-in protocol. If you are using an upgraded protocol, you can merge the code into the protocol code but this is not something for beginners. To see an example of how they can be merged check out the 1994 ReplayTV protocol in the Special Protocols folder of the discussion group.
