For the longest time I've been into JP1 with my two 6131n and 8810w remotes and JP1 simple parallel cable and it's been great.

Now, I no longer have a PC with a parallel port. I've moved onto a Vista laptop.

What I'd like to know is, should I stay with my jp1 remotes or move to jp1 1.2 or 1.3? My laptop would need a USB jp1 cable. I've heard the jp1 usb cable can have issues with Vista with it's delcom drivers.

That Radio Shack 15-135 looks interesting. How does that remote compare to my 6131n?

That's a tough call. It may be worth asking the vendor if they would take back the JP1 cable or even exchange it for a JP1.3 if you couldn't get it to work. I think it's worth a try since you have two perfectly good remotes.

Check out THIS thread about the 15-135. You can follow the link in the first post and eventually download the manual.

If you don't mind small buttons, it's not too bad. Although I don't have a 6131, the 135 looks pretty similar. The 8810 is certainly the nicest of the group over all. Since you can pick up a 135 at any Radio Shack, it's easy to return if you don't like it.

My 8810w is getting old with wear and tear. I use it strictly for learning and transferring to the 6131n. I need to press some of the buttons on the 8810w with more pressure than others.

Is there still a market for JP1 remotes or has everyone gone to the JP1.x remotes?

What are the advantages of going from a JP1 remote to a JP1.3 remote? Any negatives?

I don't mind small buttons on remotes (small hands). The buttons on the 6131n are small as well. I rather like the 6131n's DVR and DVD player exclusive buttons.

I'd like to have a JP1.3 remote and cable that will work with my Vista laptop. Though I do have an older laptop here that uses Windows XP and a celeron CPU.

The one problem with the 8810w that I have is running out of memory when learning signals to create an upgrade and putting that into RM and clearing the remote for more signals. How many commands can the 15-135 learn?

Have you looked at the JP1.2 remote, the 8820? It has a huge amount of learning memory. The support for that family of remotes (6820,8820,and 10820) is starting to mature. That remote looks very similar to your 6131n.

Plenty of JP1's can still be found online, but the future is JP1.3

More codes, more memory, but fewer extenders and less support at the moment.

No Vista issues I know of with JP1.3

Twice as many as the 8810. But the 8820 will learn three times as many as your 8810, although at the expense of some upgrade memory. The 135 has much more upgrade memory than the 8810 or 8820.

Vicky's advice is spot on. The 8820 would be the perfect replacement for your 6131.

That 8820 seems interesting to me. I would actually prefer a OFA one than a RS one.

Rob sells these, right? Even though his store is closed, does he take the occasional order?

This JP1.2 cable:

Will it work with the 8820? And no Vista issues?

Edit: I've looked at several sites for the 8820 but no one had it in stock, though I did find a place that had the 10820.

Edit #2: I've decided to get the 10820. I'll get it through Amazon. It's like fourteen dollars and change. Are they JP1.2 ready right out of the box?

You're good to go. No mods required, and you've got the right cable. Should work fine with vista.

I think you'll like the 10820. Its physically bigger than the 8820 and the keys are more widely spaced. The 8820 and the 6131n are so similar its hard to tell them apart, but the 10820 is easily differentiated from the other two.
