I'm getting sucked in again

This JP1 stuff is so addicting.

Now that I have my 8811 and my 7800's up and running with my new equipment I've been reading the boards and getting quite into the mindset.

I'm thinking about adding some remotes and have some questions:

8910 questions

Are these durable?
Are you able to display your mode when using an extender?

6131?
Are these smaller in size? I have some 6012's that I like for the size, but the button placement really isn't friendly in the dark and I'm thinking of trying something different?

--------------------------------------------------------

What about the new remotes, the JP1.2? I see that the JP1.x cables are serial cables. Are these going to be USB friendly remotes? Or are these going to be serial only? I've popped open the IR07beta and saw that on the interface menu you choose Parallel, Serial, USB or JP1.x and this kind of left me confused? I'd really like to do remote programming with my laptop which is equipped with USB.

------------------------------------------------------------

Also where could I learn more about the assembler language that these chips use. I'm fascinated by these extenders...... I know that SOMEWHERE I saw a link to chipset assemblers, but I've been looking for over an hour and can't find it anywhere.

-----------------------------------------------------

Thanks

Yes - as much as ANY remote (I wouldn't play soccer with it, though)

Yes - in fact there is an optional special protocol that allows you to customise the LCD display as you desire (within the limitations of 9 characters)

Yes - they are like the 6012 in size.

I like the button placement, but the buttons are quite small and there is no backlight - so these are considerations you ought to ...uhhhh...consider. I like the remote, but I point these out for your awareness.

Don't have one, but as I read the fora, the serial JP1.x cable works via a serial to USB adapter (whilst the serial JP1 cable does NOT)

Yeah. The parallel, serial and USB all refer the three unique and not-interchangeable JP1-specific cables, whilst the JP1.x refers to the ONLY (serial) JP1.x cable - which also happens to work via serial-USB adapter, as I mentioned above.

You should be fine if you have a USB JP1 cable and a serial to USB adapter for your JP1.x cable.

Oops! Out of my depth, here - you need an expert to jump in.

I've used JP1.X cable via USB to serial adapter and it works fine. I don't know if it matters, but the one I used is one with Prolific PL-2303 chip. In IR07, you would still keep the setting at JP1.X and it will communicate with the remote through the new COM port that the adapter creates.

There is a S3C8 assembler here, if that's what you are looking for:

Protocol builder actually has assembler/disassembler built in for all the chips to create new protocols, but I don't know if it can be used for creating extenders.

The manuals for the different chips are here, under "MCU Chip Manuals":
