JP1 Remotes

Hi guys,

I ordered a JPI.2 serial cabel and a URC-6690 remote. When I try and program it I get this error messages.

"Download remote fails with the "jp12 read failed -1" message, upload to remote successfully uploads but IR finishes with a "data read back is not same as written"

I am using IR 7.14 and have the latest RDF files (Dec 17, 2006).

I tried to test it using "jp1xtest.exe" but it would not work for me it just kep scroling. I then tried the "TestGroup with Comm Debug" and it worked. Here are the results.

Assuming that your cable is "known good" (i.e. it works on another remote) I'd start with a fresh set of batteries.

Thank you for the reply, I have tried changing the batteries.

I also tried another remote with the same result. Maybe it is the cable?

any way to test it?

The cable is the same design as the ones that DIY sells and it was tested on a URC-8820. I forget whether Rod asked for the JP1X1 or JP1X3 version, the only difference being that I cut wire #5 at the IDC on the JP1X3 version.

I would also recommend doing a 981-style reset on the remote and then trying again.

Which version of the cable did I send you? I've looked back through your PMs and I don't think you ever stated whether you wanted the JP1X1 or JP1X3 version. Either version should work with the JP1.2 URC-6690 remote, but it might help if we knew which version it is.

If you look at the IDC connector, if all 6 wires are intact like in the pic below, it's the JP1X1 version. But if wire 2nd from the right has been cut, it's the JP1X3 version.

If you are unable to get it to work, you can return the cable for a refund. In this case I would recommend that you get a USB (Flash) cable from Tommy instead.

Hi Rob,

I ordered a JP1.2/3 cabel. yes the one wire is cut.

I do have a JPI cabel that I use with my 8910. Are U saying that this cabel will work as well?

Thank you for the offer of returning the cabel. I might take you up on that offer if I can not get it to work.

FYI the remotes work great thanks.

No, the cable that you use for the URC-8910 is what we now call a "JP1 (EEPROM)" cable, whereas any cable that you would use with the URC-6690 would be a "JP1 (Flash)" cable.

Rod, if you're trying to see how few words you can use in your message you could have just replied "Yep" and it would have told us about as much as your answer does. When you say "tried them all" do you mean you tried the jp1xtest program, the reset tests, and the loop back tests? When you say the results were "still the same" does that mean the interface passed the tests or not?

The "Debug_Tester.exe" works just fine. I did the same thing on both.

I tried doing a 981-style reset on the remote but that did not work either.

I tried changing the batteries 3x.

I did not try using the resistors because the "Debug_Tester.exe" indicated that the remote was found.

I could by the resistors and try it if you think I should.
I have also uninstalled all programs and reinstalled but still no luck.

I have been using a 8910 for two years now and the IR software has not given me any trouble. I did however, update to IR 7.14 but I still cannot get it to operate properly.

You are correct in stating that it could be me doing something wrong. that is why I have not sent the cabel back and why I am on this site trying to trouble shoot.

I am not really a computer guy I just read the step by step directions and hope it works. So far I have been able to do everything I needed without too much trouble. Until now.

I do appreciate your assistance and I will try to provide more info in the future.

Rod, you said you changed batteries 3x. Are these name brand alkaline batteries? I say this because one of my extender users was having this issue and it turned out he was recharging his batteries when he told me he was replacing them, and it turned out the batteries were not holding a charge.

I assume this is the serial cable? If so what is the date on the JP1serial.dll. If its a USB cable, which driver are you using?
