Hello,
I've been researching universal remotes to run my home theater components and I'm fairly certain that I want the One For All 6131 (mostly for the Tivo functionality). My last hurdle before purchasing is do I want to spring for the JP1-enabled unit, or will the original unit be sufficient.
Here's what I'm working with:
Harman Kardon AVR 230 receiver
DirecTV receiver
Samsung HDTV
Toshiba SD400 Tivo/DVD
JVC 5-disc cd player

The universal remote that came with the H/K is poorly laid out and does not work well with my components so I want something that can handle the receiver functions as well as the other theater components.
My greatest difficulty is that the JVC cd player is a little older (purchased in the late nineties) and I no longer have the original remote for it. The H/K remote will not recognize it, so if I get the 6131, I want to make sure it will recognize it. It sounds like it shouldn't have a problem with the other components, from what I've read here and a few other boards.

So, sorry for the rambling, but can anyone give me advice on whether or not the non-JP1 will be sufficient, or should I just play it safe and get the remote with JP1 enabled?

Thanks,
Heather

Sooner or later you'll want the JP1 capabilities, so dive in head first and get the modified version to start with.

I think the big plus for the JP1 cable is the ability to program your remote with a PC and save your configuration. The ability to upgrade is also important and then there are all the advanced features...

Go for it!

You're not gonna get a very balanced response in these parts because everyone here has already discovered just how powerful JP1 is, so along those lines, I concur with the two previous posters, spring for the top of the line $23 URC-6131M! Smile

I'm a fairly new user and now have 3 URC6131s. I sent two in to UEI for their free upgrade to JP1 capability. I just had to upgrade the upgrades with new eeproms (they now match the one's Rob sells) because the official "free" upgrade left them short of full capability. While the built-in codes will probably operate your TIVO , you might find some functions missing or misplaced. With JP1 you will be able to correct most shortcomings. My official Hauppauge MediaMVP upgrade was missing a lot of commands , now corrected.

Thanks for the advice. I suspected I'd get a lot of pro-JP1 comments. Secretly, I think that's what I wanted to hear.

As for the non-JP1 of the equation, the 6131 will need alot advanced codes entered to get a working code for your Toshiba SD-H400 tivo, see this thread:

The Masked Man is a WebTV user, however I have heard on the grapevine that he has a brand new PC, but what I haven't heard is whether he's taken it out of the box yet!!! Smile
