So I have a ReplayTV (showstopper) and I have customized the remote using JP1. The reason I started using JP1 was that the remote seemed to die a few months age. Resetting it a JP1 created image fixed the problem.

Then a few weeks ago, the remote just died again. I messed around with IR and RM and made it work again. The TV and Replay buttons were switched, but it worked.

Now it's died again and there seems to be nothing I can do to make the remote work. Could it be the replay going crazy? Or is my remote just broke? I'm thinking about just buying a new replay remote and seeing if that works.

Any idea what could be going on?

So now my replay works. Just wait a day and replay gets out of its funk and can listen to remote signals now. Weird. Probably some very random bug.

It's possible it's time to change the batteries. Wink

This sounds bizarre, but it happened to me.

My Sony Camcorder was sometimes left switched on close to my TV/entertainment system, and the IR signals it was constantly emitting "jammed" the remote control signals to the TV.

In my stupidity it took a couple of days for me to work out the reason my TV remote wouldn't work sometimes...

So if changing the batteries doesn't help - it's a longshot but consider any other devices in the room which could be generating IR "interference"

Now it's not working again. Crazy. Is my replay just done? I guess I'll try sticking the original drive in there and see if that helps at all.

If the remote is not functioning at all , you might want to check and see if there is any output from the remote before swapping the parts in the Replay. If you have a digital camera or camcorder you can aim the remote at the lens and see if there is any blinking light from the LED (these camera imagers can see into the near-infrared) If it's not blinking then it is definetly the remote control that has the problem (no point in tearing the Replay apart when the commander is not sending anything)

The common problems with intermittent remotes (besides batteries) are LEDs and battery connectors coming unsoldered . The oscillators crystals can also crack loose (usually older designs). Might be time to examine the circuit board carefully.

Halogen lamps can swamp IR receivers too.

Does the remote still control your TV, etc? If so, then the remote is OK and there may well be something wrong with your RTV. Before you start taking it apart, give it a cold boot (ie, pull the power cable) and see if that helps.

If you've put a large drive in the RTV yourself, did you patch it for large clusters? If not, that would have helped.

It's back! The remote definitely works. There's just this weird TV / Replay buttons being switched thing--no biggie. The replay is screwy. Redoing the upgrade may help.
Thanks everyone.

The upgrade original Replay remotes had the IR and CG buttons swapped, so they fixed this with keymoves. Therefore, if you ever do a 980 style ops reset on the remote, the keymoves would be deleted and those two buttons would be swapped again.
