How many remotes do you have?

Post by Ellen »

A universal remote is supposed to make it so that a person only needs one remote control instead of one for each device in his system. However, comments in this thread seem to indicate that at least some of us have almost as many universal remotes as we do OEM remotes :)

Thought it would be interesting to do a poll to see how many jp1 remotes we all have. I'll start off by listing mine:

1 URC-6050 (my very first universal remote purchased 12 or 13 years ago)
1 URC-7200
2 URC-7800
2 15-1994
1 URC-7560
1 RCU810
1 URC-6011
1 URC-6131
1 15-2117 (should have this one in a couple days as the local RatShack is holding one for me)

What about the rest of you folks?

From the list below you can see I have a fair amount of universal remotes but only 5 or 6 are actually in use and in each case they control ALL devices in the room they are in. 2 of them are set up to be used in a couple of rooms where there are only TV's and DVD's or VCR's.

JP1 remotes
  • 6 in the main TV room (2 active - 2116 and 9960 with identical programming and 4 for testing etc)
    - 15-2116, URC-9960, URC-8040, URC-8060, 15-2104, URC-6011
4 in the kitchen (1 active - 6131 and 3 in a draw because there dups or not in use)
    - URC-6131, 15-2104, URC-6011, URC-8811
    2 with TV's upstairs (URC-6011 and a URC-8811)
1 in the basement for the exercise videos my wife uses - URC-6011
NOTE: No rooms have an OEM in them

I have a single URC-6131 (thanks Rob :!: ) that handles all my needs.

I still have my old URC-7560 in a closet that I only use because it has the learning capability that is lacking on the 6131.

My original goal always had been to have a single remote for all purpose and JP1 made it possible.

Let's see...
  • 1 RS 15-2103 (used for the computer now)
  • 2 RS 15-2104 (one in the living room, one in a box)
  • 2 RS 15-1993 (one I upgraded for an Apex TV my parents bought, the other is around somewhere...)
I originally picked up the 2103 hoping to use it to control everything, and that was when I discovered the JP1 group. I then found out that the 2103 didn't have an extender and that the 2104 was on sale for $10, so I picked up two of those. The 1993's I have had for years, one used to be used for the computer and the other was for a TV whose remote was flaky.

Oh, and obviously I have a whole bunch of OEM remotes, none of which ever really get used. :D

My workhorse is a Cinema 6+ . It controls two satellite receivers, a Tivo (which controls a third satellite receiver), a DVD player, a receiver, a TV, and a VCR.

I have a Maestro II (which is a bit funky to make upgrades for), which is unused, and an RS-15-8102, which has limited JP1 capability.

It's supposed to be ONE.

This thread is comical :D
And I now have ammunition for official justification for more of these. Thanks Ellen.

Only two, both UEI units: an 8910 and a 6800B.

The 8910 is currently in service, while the 6800 is maintained as a backup.
All custom devices and protocols are kept "in sync" on both units.
There are five custom devices--TV, 5.1 receiver, VCR, DVD player, and an HDTV tuner--plus a special delay protocol for the TV.
No extenders are used on either remote; if I were to use one it would be for ToadTog support. (Fie on you, Samsung!)

As for the OEM remotes, all but the TV have some rudimentary multi-device functionality. The 6800 was originally purchased to replace four OEM remotes; the 8910 was added one day when the earlier OFA unit, hand-programmed with more than 50 keymoves and 20 learned codes, had its EEPROM corrupted by weak batteries. This was before I knew about the 981 reset, or about the JP1 group.
