Newbie question

Post by Philosofy »

I bought a 6131 for my mom for her birthday, but it doesn't do what I expected. She has a Phillips TV, a TiVo, and a VCR/DVD combo unit. I was hoping hte 6131 would change the input on the tv to match the device being used, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. Can I do this via JP1, and can I program the remote to change the input on the TV and the output on the VCR/DVD to match the device being used? The other problem I have is that I live in Indiana, she lives in Rhode Island, so I have to get this programming done right: there is no way I can test it on her system.

Any suggestions, or should I just pay the extra $80 to get an MX-500?

Thanks!

Phil,

To do what you want, you need macros, so that the device button will perform more than one action (switch to TV mode, switch to the appropriate input, switch to the appropriate device mode, etc).

The retail version of the URC-6131 does not support macros (other than "Master Power"). It also is not JP1 enabled.

The JP1 enhanced version (available from Rob for $23 + shipping, see Rob's Remotes for Sale) supports macros and many other things, and with the addition of JP1 and the extender becomes a very versatile remote.

Since you already have a URC-6131, you could try to mod it yourself. Instructions can be found at urc-6012w-eeprom.txt

I use my enhanced URC-6131 to control a Samsung HLN507W1 DLP TV, a Philips DSR6000R DirecTiVo, a Philips DVD player, and an Onkyo HTS760B HTIB. I use the device keys to automatically select the correct inputs on the TV and HTIB, and have a global "Power on" macro that is invoked on a short-press of the Power button, and a "Power Off" macro that is invoked on a long-press of the Power button.

Not being able to test is a SEVERE limitation. There is a lot of: try an idea, find it doesn't quite work, try again to getting things to work the first time you set up a remote.

You might want to set one up for your own equipment (to get the experience) and then do you Mother's system on your next visit.
