How to move devices FROM IR to KM

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

How to move devices FROM IR to KM

Post by Nos402 »

Please excuse my newbie ignorance. I promise I have searched and read everything I could get my hands on (Started about 5:00 messing with my brand new remote and JP-1 cable, and it's now 1:23 am). I've made a lot of progress but still have far to go. Since I can't find some codes for my devices, one suggestion was that I get a learning remote to learn from them and then use the learned codes to program my URC-6131. The problem is, I can't figure out how get things from IR to KM.

For example, the 6131 has a code that operates most of my audio receiver functions, but not all. Is there a way to get this code from the remote into KM to see exactly what functions are available and what is mapped where?

I'm sure I'll come up with more questions shortly. In the meantime I'll continue pouring through the net! Thanks for any help. Just when I was about to totally give up on this whole JP-1 customizing, I finally had a breakthrough and made some progress. Hopefully that trend will continue!

After learning your signals, you download the remote's EEPROM contents into IR, and look at the "Learned" tab. Each learned signal will have a decode. You should ignore the "sent once', "sent repeatedly", etc stuff and just look at the top section, where your decodes will show a protocol name, device number, possibly a sub-device number, OBC, Hex and EFC (maybe more than one) for each learned signal. There may be more than one line of data here, but in most cases the basic info for your upgrade can be gleaned from here. Especially if you look at bunch of signals, you are likely to see a commonality of Protocol/Device/Sub-Device. This data gets entered on the "setup" sheet in KM, while the OBCs (or EFCs, whichever mode you choose) get enetered on the "function" sheet - where you can overwrite the names of all of the functions to match precisely what you have in your component. After all of the functions are entered here, assign them to the buttons you desire on the "buttons" sheet, and your upgrade is ready to go.

There is no SIMPLE way to download and analyze a built-in code from a JP1 remote but there are several options:
(a) you take the setup code that provides "most" of the functionality you seek and check out the advanced code section HERE for additional codes. There is no guarantee that YOUR COMPONENT will respond to those codes, but it gives you a starting point;
(b) Post your setup code that works and hope one of the experts can tell you what is available in that setup code (they usually can); or
(c) Try manually executing EACH EFC ("shift"-"1st digit"-"2nd digit"-"third digit") when that setup code is active in your 6131 and see what it does! (A slow and painful process, at best)

PMFJI,
I upgraded my remote a while ago and have lost my old KM spreadsheet with all the buttons assigned. I now have a second DirecTivo and I need to set a remote address and I was really hoping there was some way to take the device and upgrade codes from IR and reload KM and just tweak it to my needs. It appears this is not possible, but I just wanted to a)Make sure and B) if anyone had a suggestion other than just rebuilding the upgrades in KM.

Thanks,
Mike

Rather than rebuild the upgrades in KM/RM, you can use on of the exisiting upgrades as a starting point. There are a number of them in the PVR folder at Yahoo!

Greg,
Thanks for the reply. I grabbed a couple of the files from there last night to see if they would give me an idea of where to start. It has been a long time since I have done any of this and its all coming back pretty slowly unfortunately. KM has changed a lot and now I see there's another tool (RM) as well.

I couldn't get my cable to work with the new IR until I found a message somehwere that recommended turning off AutoCheck. It all seems to be working fine now and I just need to get my layout down like I want it and redo the upgrade. I wasn't really trying to be lazy as much as hoping not to screw up what I already had. But I've saved off my config and am going to try and get the upgrade done tonight.

Thanks again for your reply. I am still amazed at the JP1 community both with the technical abilities and the willingness to help.

Regards,
Mike

Just wanted to say thanks again to the jp1 community. I got a second DirecTivo and needed to set the remote address on my 1994 which is what got me looking into this again. While I was at it, I fixed/added a few things that have been bugging me about my previous setup. It was great, now its dang near perfect. If I only had discrete codes on some of my TOAD components.... ;)

Thanks again,
Mike
