Device address code for dual PVRs - how?

This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!

Device address code for dual PVRs - how?

Post by mvgossman »

How is it accomplished to set up two buttons on my 6131 PVR remote to have one of them control my PVR (A Directivo) with remote address 1, and another to control remote address 2 for instance? Is it just a matter of differing keycodes that I could discover with a learning remote such as the 8810w, or am I overlooking a special "address code" feature somewhere in Keymover or IR?

You need to use one of the TiVo upgrade files, then load it into KM or RM. The Unit Code field is the field you need to change.

Ah - I see it there in the HDVR2 Upgrade, I've been trying to reinvent the wheel.

I've been playing with it a bit, and I'm curious:

1. How the main and sub device codes were discovered.
2. Why are there KeyMoves both under the Device Upgrade/Keymove code and separately under "Key Move Code" on the Setup tab?
3. Is this HDVR2 an early effort since, for instance, the PVR Menu button is not hooked up to a button and the thumb up and down buttons are inactive? I'm still learning, but it appears that they may be hooked up to PIP and swap on account of someone's personal preferences??

This is why we always suggest you start by looking in the files section to see if someone has been there before you. 8)

They were discovered in the usual manner: learn code, load into IR, look at learned tab & see decode of learned signal.

The keymoves within the device upgrade are "bound" to the device upgrade, meaning that they are logically part of the upgrade. The other keymoves are "external", meaning that they are (usually) assigned to buttons not associated with the device to which this upgrade will be assigned. As an example, a TV upgrade might want to put a keymove on a DVD button that selects the DVD input on the TV.

More than likely, the button assignments are based on what buttons were available on the JP1 remote that was being used when the upgrade was created. Very few remotes have thumbs buttons, so it's not surprising that they are not assigned a function. However, since the function-to-button assignments tend to be a personal preference, you are free to reassign the functions in any manner you like.
