Remote control and USB cable

Hello everyone.

This is my first post, I hope someone here can help me.
I live in Brazil.

I have just purchased a slingbox but it won't work with my cable TV box,

I am looking to buy a working JP1 remote plus (USB) cable to connect to my PC.

I'm looking for a tutorials on how to get a JP1 remote to learn the appropriate codes and upload & convert them into a format suitable for the slingbox, can someone indicated the link?

If the only purpose for that remote is to learn signals to be decoded for use in making a Slingbox file, you should read this thread

Anything that can capture an IR signal and call DecodeIr.dll will give you the information you need. A JP1 remote is both more expensive (after you include the USB cable) and less convenient than IR Widget.

I haven't used that IR Widget.

Despite my severe lack of manual dexterity in building electronic devices, I was able to build a few copies of the simpler device used (on a parallel port) with the CaptureIr software. Those work very well for my IR decoding needs. That choice may be even less expensive than the IR Widget, but probably less convenient as well. On a slow single core computer IR Widget likely gives more accurate results. On a dual core computer, I don't know of any accuracy problems with CaptureIR.

I'm an obvious newb to remotes, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

You are correct my only purpose for that remote plus (USB) cable is to learn signals from my diferents remote control (cable box, video recorder, etc) to be decoded for use in making a Slingbox file.

i understand that cheapest way is to have a friend that have a remote with learn function and the plus remote master, correct?

My friend have a Universal RF20, this control has learn function.

we remove the bateries and saw 6 pin
But how can we transfer the code learned in remote Universal RF20 to computer?

The RF20 is not a JP1 remote, so we can't get the learned signals that way.

I´m realy confuse about what to do:

what I understand;

(a) 4 hardwares:

1 - My eqquipment IR remote control (vcr, tv, etc...)

2 - IR remote control to learn signal from My eqquipment IR remote control

3 - Interface to conect (2) IR remote control that have learned from (1)My eqquipment IR remote control

4 - Computer, with serial or usb or paralell port, to conect (3)Interface with (2)IR remote control that have learned signal


(b) 2 softwares:

5 - IR.exe

6 - Keymap Master (KM)

It´s correct or i need something more em (a) hardware e (b)software????

Your ultimate goal is to create a binary upgrade file so your slingbox can control your cable box.

So you need a way to examine the IR signals sent by your cable box remote.

Once you have the details about the IR signals that control your cable box, you'll be using RemoteMaster to create the binary upgrade file. You will not be using KM.

There are a few different ways to examine the IR signals generated by your remote

1. Use a JP1 remote to capture (learn) the IR signals from your cable box remote, connect the JP1 remote with a JP1 cable to your PC and examine the learned signals in IR.exe. This requires you to buy a JP1 remote and a JP1 cable
2. Use an IR Widget connected to your PC to capture the IR signals from your cable box remote. This requires you to buy an IR Widget.
3. Build a CaptureIR compatible cable to connect to your PC and capture the IR signals from your cable box remote. This requires you to buy the parts and build the CaptureIR compatible cable.

Option 1 is the most expensive, but if you would also like a good inexpensive universal remote it is a good choice.

Options 2 is probably the best choice for the non-technical person who doesn't need or want a good inexpensive universal remote.

Option 3 is the least expensive, but requires some technical skill to buy and build the CaptureIR compatible cable, and (I think) will only work with a parallel port.

And I will adopt the "best choice for a non-technical person", option #2.

Thank you letting me know that I'll be using RemoteMaster to create the binary upgrade file and I will not be using KM.

I have 2 more questions, can you help me again?

1 - What is the software [a] that I have to download that will work with IR Widget to capture the IR signals that control my cable box?

2 - What is the extension name of the file ( file._ _ _ )that is generated from this software [a] ?

3 - Does the RemoteMaster read this file ( file. _ _ _ )?

4 - Do I need any more driver or softwares to make all of this things happen?

Information about the IR Widget, software and drivers can all be found here.

I haven't used one myself, but from the screen capture shown it looks like you have to manually copy the information into RM, much like it is copied from IR in this tutorial.
