Onn 6-Device URC-3660 Problem...

This is a UEI remote. I have five devices plus three partial devices operating using just five of its device assignments. I am pleased with it, but it has one glitch that bothers me.

I cannot use Key Mover [994] nor its learning feature [975] to overwrite the FFwd & Rew keys (in any device type or any device code). Currently, I just assign such keys elsewhere, but that is not intuitive to my non-technical wife.

Is there a [edit: 9xx] unlock code to restore this writability?

Those are special on the ONN since they have both a long and a short press. Make sure you?re putting your function on the right one. I?m able to assign both in RM on any device without any settings change. Never tried it manually.

I too can not learn on the FFwd & Rew keys.
I did not test key move but i suspect the same results
Perhaps the FFwd & Rew keys can not learn because they have 2 functions Normal and Held.
If I remember correctly you are not using RMIR on this remote but rather using the 9xx commands only.
It is possible to put your learend signal on those keys using RMIR
But I am not aware of any method to accomplish that without RMIR

When programming remotes like this, it's generally a good idea to program the FFWD and REW functions to both the long and short press versions of the buttons, that way you know it works regardless of whether you do a long or short press. That is, if you don't need the distinct functionality.

I am unfamiliar with RMIR.

Can that be done using 9xx commands?

As a sys tech, seems like RMIR would be right up your alley and far easier than the manual programming you do today. You should really consider giving it a try.

I have not tried this myself, but holding the ffwd or rew button for a second during programming might do the trick.

Thanks for the link. (It looks similar to the interface for my clone remote.)

Holding the button down did not help.

You posted in a JP1 forum, and didn't say that you are NOT a JP1 user, so we naturally assumed.

I honestly don't know, each remote is different and 99.9% of users here are JP1 users, so we're not limited to 9xx commands.

Your 9xx page was the first that I encountered here. I (mistakenly) believed that that was the basis for JP1 programming.

JP1 programming involves connecting the remote to your computer and programming it using the RMIR program.

I will explore that more in depth as I am able to make or secure an interface cable.

This thread has lots of good information about cables:
https://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16360

For example, here's one for $8.52 shipped (from USA):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/326134431640

it comes with a 1*6 connector, so you'd need to replace that with a 2*3 connector.

Here's a listing where you can get ten 6-pin connectors for about $10:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/304102714605

If you don't want to buy the connectors, here's an FTDI cable with independent connectors, that you could glue together into the right formation. It's about $13 but it's coming from China, so you'll have to wait for it.

Can I physically transplant the jacks between the two connectors, or will I have to strip and solder or crimp?

(My eyesight is not good for some solder work.)

the wires have the internals of the slot attached to them already, so if you're replacing the connector, all you have to do is, pop them out of the old connector, and then pop them into the new one, it's quite easy.

If you go with the last cable that I posted, the one from China, you could just arrange the individual connectors how you want them, and then super glue them together. Or, you could connect them to the remote's 6-pin one at a time, which is a bit tedious but is doable.
