This is the JP1 beginners forum. There's no such thing as a stupid question in here, so post away, but this forum is just for JP1 users and people considering JP1, non-JP1 users please use the appropriate forum above!
The combo I provided above is a VCR device type. In IR, with Replay5000 rdf selected, it appears that one can select other than a TV device type, so if loaded and selected via IR, perhaps it WILL work? Try it anyways and see how many (if any) buttons work.
If it doesn't, I have changed it to a TV device type below. Try this instead if the first one doesn't work.
If ONLY the TV device type works, then that is yet ANOTHER reason to switch to the extender, since it allows you to assign a LOT more functions to buttons in upgrades other than the TV device type.

I just checked my work email and I had forgotten that I had created an IR file for him which already has a combo upgrade in it, so I have no idea what the problem is. All he had to do was load the file into the remote and everything would have been taken care of.
Rob www.hifi-remote.com Please don't PM me with remote questions, post them in the forums so all the experts can help!
Apologies, Capn. I neglected to provide the Panasonic model number when you first asked for it, which complicated matters. As for the other issues, this is all so new to me that it's still not clear what questions to ask, what information to provide, and how to use the instructions I'm being given.
Rob is right. All I want to do is add the second TV code to the Replay Sonic/Blue remote so that the TV button on the remote turns the TV on and off, and at the same time, the volume control on the remote also works. I tried to make that clear earlier but I guess I didn't do a very good job of it.
So...Rob and Capn: is there a simple way to just add the second code? Are the Device and Protocol upgrades the way to do that? If so I'll go back to the beginners section to make sure I understand how to use that information and will try it tonight.

David,
Do you recall an email that I sent you on 7/12/2006 at 11:03am? (see the content below) Attached to this email was an IR file which already contains an upgrade that contains both the power and volume codes for your TV combo. So, all you need to do is use your JP1 cable and the IR.exe program to load this file into your remote and you'll be all set. Therefore, PLEASE don't bother spending any additional time downloading upgrades or trying any other upgrades, at least not before you've at least tested the file that I sent you.
The Robman wrote:First, you should confirm that TV/0780 lets you control the POWER using the POWER button.
As for what you should do with the JP1 cable, that really depends on whether you just want to get this one device programmed or whether you want to do a lot more, because you can use JP1 to convert this remote into a 12 device universal remote if you want.
If all you want to do is program this one device, you can load the attached file into the remote using the IR.exe program (there will be no need to use KM or RM).
If you want to change the remote into a 12 device universal remote, with added support for all your other devices, you'll need to learn a lot more about JP1. You can ask questions in the forums:
I know that email very well. I've read and re-read it.
I got hung up on "you can load the attached file into the remote using the IR.exe program (there will be no need to use KM or RM). "
If the beginner file tells how to do that, I'm not finding it.
I just finished trying the procedure in your previous email, checking back to the beginner file for every step. I didn't know what to do about the "be sure to assign a button" comment. I uploaded it. Neither the volume, mute nor power buttons were working. I used the TV/Mute buttons on the remote, and put the 0250 volume code back in so at least I'm back where I started.
Sorry. You guys are working so hard and I feel like a Class A dummy but I'm not there yet.
Perhaps the problem is that Rob helped you TOO much. The readme's presume that you are building your own upgrade. Rob has done all of that for you, so the only part of the instructions that applies in your case is the last half of step 7:
Summary 1 - Loading an Upgrade
1. Download the upgrade file from the File Section.
2. Load it into KM using KM's "LOAD" button (in the Setup sheet)
3. Change the remote to your remote.
4. Enter any addition functions that you have codes for in the Functions sheet.
5. Re-arrange the buttons as you see fit in the Buttons sheet.
6. Copy the code blocks from the Setup sheet over to IR.
7. Assign the new setup code to a device button in IR and re-load into your remote.
If you open the file Rob gave you in IR, and connect your cable to your PC and remote, all you have to do is click on the "UPLOAD TO REMOTE" button.
If you want MORE functionality from your Replay5000, you really ought to try the upgrades I provided you above as possible alternatives to Rob's and even further, transition to the extender.

I've tried and tried. When I click the file he sent me I get an error message saying "You must unzip the entire contents of this distribution file..." But my software for extracting zip files doesn't recognize it as a zip, so I can't seem to get to the file. I even tried changing the extension to .zip to see if I could fool the program, but that didnt' work either.
I thought I could paste it here so you could see it but can't get that to work. I could send you his email with the file attached if I had your email address, or maybe you can figure out what I should do without that.

(1) Click on the blue words above. They are a link to a ready-to-use IR file for you;
(2) If IR.exe is set up properly, clicking on the file will automatically open an instance of IR.exe with that IR file opened in it;
(2a) IF IR.exe does not automatically open, then SAVE the above file
(2b) Start IR.exe, and
(2c) OPEN (from within IR - File>Open...) the file you just downloaded;
(3) LOOK at the General tab - notice that TV/1250 is the setup code assigned to the TV button. This is the upgrade that Rob created for you;
(4) LOOK in the Devices tab - notice that TV/1250 is ONE of three upgrades loaded there. Note: The other two upgrades (TV/2000 and VCR/2000) I created using the Panasonic MIX Combo protocol to get more of your DVD, VCR, and TV functions mapped. You can assign any one of those three upgrades to the TV button on the General tab, as TV/1250 currently is assigned. I would suggest you try each one in turn and see which gives you the best functionality. Here are the differences:
TV/1250 assigns ONLY Power and Volume buttons as you requested initially;
TV/2000 assigns functions to the rest of the "TV" buttons (numerical buttons and CH+/-;
VCR/2000 assigns functions to EVERY button on the remote, but since it's a "VCR" device type, I'm not sure it'll work on your TV button, but it can't hurt to try.
(5) Go back to the General tab (ensure your cable and remote are plugged into the PC) and click on "UPLOAD TO REMOTE"
(6) Unplug the cable from the remote and go test it.

What I've finally discovered it that Rob's ir file absolutely will not open on my #1 computer for some reason. But it DOES open on my #2. (Both are Win 2K--go figure)
I tried renaming the opened file on #2, still with an ir extension, and sending it to #1. Still won't open. Other files with ir extensions do open but I have no idea how to fix this.
Yes, I do. I'll just plug the JP1 onto the #2 and do the upgrade from there.
You did two great things:
1. You gave me very complete step-by-step, impossible to misunderstand instructions
2. You gave me a file that works and explained how to open it from inside a standard ir file if it didn't open. I had never seen that explanation before. (It may be in the beginner's file but I didn't find it there.)

You should understand that this "method" of opening a file is probably assumed to require no explanation, since it is identical to EVERY WINDOWS PROGRAM ON THE PLANET!
Uhh... WHAT, exactly is it that works?
I'm particularly curious about whether or not the VCR device type will work on the TV button.
If it does, you can add/delete other functions as you see fit from THIS KM file.

This remote is not a universal remote as you've come to know them. There aren't any "device" buttons as such. The two buttons that look like device buttons (ie, the TV and Replay buttons) are really POWER buttons. The three volume buttons are hard wired to the TV device mode and the rest of the buttons are hard wired to the Replay device mode. So, bottom line, the VCR code that you created won't give him access to any additional functions.
I am also curious as to what works but I didn't feel like dragging this out any further.

Yeah, well, maybe "open the file with ir" is clear to most beginners but since practically everythng else about the ir file is completely different, I never made the connection that it was the standard Windows File/Open command that was being referred to. If it's obvious to every other IR beginner I'd be VERY surprised.
What works is that the TV button now turns the set on and off and the volume and mute buttons on the Replay remote do what they're supposed to do. These worked fine on my old TV but I could get only one or the other to work with the new one until I finally got the IR issue worked out.
As for the VCR, I rarely use it so having to use a second remote for run, fast forward, rewind etc. is no problem. Everything is the way I wanted it.
