There really isn't much significance to the letter of the setup code in the current version of Slingplayer. The generic remote showed certain button sections in the old version depending on the device type. The new version shows the same generic remote skin regardless of the device type. Therefore the five digit setup code simply has letter representing the first digit instead of a number.

The setup wizard for the Slingbox goes through a few screens to determine the set-top boxes' appropriate device type, manufacturer, and the setup code. Using these three bits of information, it will determine from Sling Media's database if any other files are necessary to download for your configuration. These files can be a realistic SlingRemote skin, updated IR codes, and/or button to command association for the Slingplayer (desktop/phone/tablet/web) client.
A year ago, I had cataloged every realistic SlingRemote skin in this wiki page:
http://slingbox.wikia.com/wiki/Skin.toc. As you can see on that page, the remote skins for my setup are the "
SA8300" and the "
Sony-hxd870". If you click into the the "
Sony-hxd870" skin you'll see that it has one association "PVR.Sony.V1128" while the "
SA8300" has many more associations. This means in order to display the Sony skin I had to make the exact choices within the setup wizard as shown below.
Since my Sony DXP-CX995V is a dvd jukebox and not an actual PVR, the default IR codes will not work. Alan Richey created the appropriate Remote Master Device Upgrade (PL/RV) bins with the V1128 setup codes for me. By placing those files into the SBAV directory of the Slingplayer program, they took precedence over all other sources and was uploaded into the Slingbox's flash storage. Had I not place files there, the setup program would have checked the Sling Media IR database then instruct the Slingbox to use the default IR codes in lieu of any available updates.

This is somewhat true. In the original Slingplayer 1.0 program the entire application was skinable by using xml and graphic files. Now with the current version of Slingplayer 2.0, only the remote may wear a custom skin. Most the skinning information was taught to us by BrandonC from placeshiftingenthusiasts. That is how Alan Richey was able to create his own custom Slingplayer remote skin:
