Customizing an Upgraded Device

Post by DrD »

Ok, I've just been trying my hand at Upgrading new Devices on my Outlaw Audio remote using IR.exe and the JP1. I've successfully added several devices, some with Protocol and some without. Basically, I was focusing on my JVC DVD player controls. After using JP1 and IR to add all my components to my Outlaw Audio remote, everything works with near full functionality with the exception of the DVD player. :(

After some trial and error with default JVC DVD codes, I decided to try a customized device that someone else built, and this worked better than the original JVC code I was using but it still had some problems. The only buttons that do not work correctly are the forward, rewind, pause, etc. I tried a little guesswork on the KM settings for functions but it was a bit confusing to me. Now without digging too much into this text file and the KM settings and corresponding EFC code, I decided to switch gears and try something different. Since I succeeded in loading new devices, I wanted to try adding a device for my Phillips Tivo which I had never controlled with my Outlaw Remote. This files in KM required both a protocol and a device upgrade which I did and this worked. :) But once again everything worked accept forward, reverse, pause and a few others. This file was in the Yahoo Files directory called "Devices Codes". Rather than try to fix this file for my Tivo, I went into the Yahoo Files directory called "User Configurations", and I found another Tivo file that someone created. So I replaced the protocol and device code in the the Edit Device section of IR, and uploaded and this one works PERFECTLY! So I'm very happy with that result for my Tivo, and I wish I could do the same thing with my DVD player code. I guess I just got lucky. :roll:

I tried every JVC file I could find into KM and then into the Add Device section of IR. But none of them give me all the features of my DVD player that I would like - the main ones I cannot seem to get working are rewind, forward, pause on the correct buttons. I tried comparing the two Tivo Files - the one that worked and the one that didn't and I can't understand the differences. Can someone put into simple terms how to take a file and fix it for my component - that is, get the right functions on the right buttons ? What kills me is that there is a file called JVC-XN50 which is my model, yet not all the functions work for me. I'm still learning, so thanks for the patience. Any ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Darren

Darren,
When you load up one of these files into KM, what do you do next?

The correct answer is:
1) Change the selected remote to my remote (ie, Outlaw Audio)
2) Go to the buttons tab and make sure that all the functions I need are assigned to buttons, especially the transport buttons.
3) If I discover that the selected device mode doesn't include all the buttons I need, I then check the Layout sheet to see if another mode would better suit my needs, and if I find such a mode I change the selected device mode (in KM's Setup sheet) to the one I found.

In addition to everything Rob said, make sure you assign the device type/setup code referenced in the upgrade to the appropriate device button on IR's General tab.

Yes, I did select the Outlaw Remote at top after loading the JVC_XN50 file into KM. And with the help of your post, I looked more closely at the Layout page, which I didn't do so much the first time. I only looked at Buttons and Functions previously and it didn't seem there was much I could do there. Now I'm noticing on the layout page, that the functions of stop, rewind, pause, etc. are assigned to strange keys such as vid3 and DVD. I don't understand this - but at least I have a bit more control now. Can I move these functions to the right place ? stop=stop, rewind=rewind, etc. I'll keep trying to see if I can get it to work. At least most of the functions I need are there - just in the wrong place.

For device type, I set it to DVD in the KM Setup page, but I don't have DVD in my IR settings for the Outlaw Remote, so I use OEM and that seems to work ok. I did this for my TIVO and it worked so I'm doing that for my DVD player also. So in IR under devices, I have OEM:1558 and that points to my new code.

Also, I noticed there are 2 "key moves", and I'm not sure what they do. There is key 57 and 58 - on the Buttons page of KM, it says they are assigned to power on and power off, but I'm not sure how to even use those key moves. Any info appreciated.

Thanks,
Darren

The Functions sheet is where the functions are named and the appropriate codes are entered.

The Buttons sheet is where you assign the previously defined functions to the actual buttons of your choosing.

The Layout sheet is nothing more than a listing of the available keymapped buttons in the various device modes. There is nothing on this sheet that can (or needs) to be edited.

You might want to take another look at the keymap-master-readme.txt file, as this is all explained in there.

For device type, I set it to DVD in the KM Setup page, but I don't have DVD in my IR settings for the Outlaw Remote, so I use OEM and that seems to work ok.
If you used DVD in the KM upgrade, then you need to use VCR as the device type in the Outlaw. When you pasted in the device upgrade code, it should have indicated the device type in the Upgrade Device dialog box where you pasted in the code.

Not knowing the Outlaw remote myself, I can't help with what those buttons actually are. If you don't want (or need) the keymoves, you can delete the function assignment on the Buttons sheet.

Mark,

Your posts were very helpful - thanks. And one part of your last post helped lead me in the right direction, and now my problem is solved. :)

When you mentioned about the relationship between device types (choosing DVD in KM and then VCR in IR), I realized I had an inconsistency there. But rather then setting my device type to VCR in IR, I left it as OEM, and I changed my device type in KM to OEM. And it worked beautifully. Now all the functions are there and on the right buttons - which is what I would have expected the first time. I re-read that part of the readme.txt file, but I still didn't see anything about this device-to-device type relationship, but maybe I missed it. In any case, it makes good sense to me now, and I'm sure setting to DVD in KM and then changing from VCR to OEM in IR was what caused me the problem. I only did that because I didn't want to use my VCR button for that. Thanks very much for your help and getting me up and running.

Regards,
Darren

If you use one device mode in KM and then change it in IR, it will mess up your buttons, this is true of all remotes.

In the Outlaw remote, the devices are shared as follows:

Code: Select all

IR        KM
--------  -------------------------------------------
CBL/SAT = Cable,SAT,Video Acc
TV      = TV
VCR     = VCR,DVD,Tape,Laserdisc
AUDIO   = CD,Tuner,DAT,Home Auto,Misc Audio,Phono,Amp
OEM     = OEM Mode
Also, as I stated above, when you paste in an upgrade code, IR will display its device type right below the pasted in code.
