Using a "bin" file from an official One For All su

Hi, I've been emailed a bin file containing the setup codes for an HD PVR we have here in SA from the local one-for-all agents.

The file does not appear valid for IR, is there a utility to "make" it compatible? It's obviously compiled by their official software.

I can send the remote to the agents but given that they are in another state it would take about two weeks for them to load it and send it back so I thought I'd try here first (it's also a good exercise while I'm about it )

The remote is a One For All URC 7556 and the Decoder is a PACE/UEC HD PVR

PS: I have a usb remote from Tommy and successfully managed (thanks to this forum) to get my WDTVLIVE to work on the above remote

Hmm, I don't know what kind of bin file would be sent for a One For All 7556,

Usually when we talk about bin files we are talking about slingbox files. IR.exe isn't used for slingbox systems, since the primary purpose of IR is to communciate with the remote, and with slingboxes you mearly put the bin file in a folder. However if we need to obtain information from a "slingbox-bin-file" you would import that into RemoteMaster. Information from RemoteMaster can then be translated for the urc-7556 and copied to an IR file and added to the remote.

But again, there are other types of bin files.

Did they provide any instructions on how to use this file? The only OFA/UEI distributed upgrade files I have ever heard of are WAV files.

Maybe if you upload it to the Diagnosis Area (and post a link to it), someone can look at it and see

I suspect that he was emailed a WAV file, with the idea being that he would play the file in order to load the upgrade into the remote via it's modem.

But regardless, I'm wondering what we are supposed to do without being able to see the file in question.

Wow I'm overwhelmed with the response from everyone

I'd like to say that my original post was not one to have someone else solve my problem but more to see if there was an obvious direction I should be following so again thank you for all your input.

The file I've been given is not a wav file unless it has the wrong extension (it's also way too small) , the guy on the other end of the line was not exactly madly keen to mail it to me either but I think he was dying to see if I could crack it... he was very quick to tell me that they were the only people in the country who could upgrade remotes until I told him I'd added the WDTV Live to mine...

I did out of curiosity try importing the file into Remote Master but nothing happened.

PS: I think the bin file contains two upgrades not one...

gregglumley, is the original remote that came with the Pace HD PVR a UEI remote? If so, perhaps you could blink back the setup code.

Keep in mind that all the programs here, like RM, IR, etc are home made so we defined the format of the files that they read, with no help from UEI.

The file that you have been sent is probably an upgrade file in the format that UEI uses internally. In other words, it's their own version of JP1.

It's also probably encrypted, so it might take a little bit longer to decipher.

To help us out, did they tell you what setup codes are included in this file?

I don't know if this helps but the codes are:

1059 and 1060

PS: On this remote code 1175 (satellite of course) works perfectly except for the "OK" button... strange.

Sat 1175 is a RC6-M-20n (ver 2) 236 0
It looks like all the official UEI RC6-M-20n 236, 0, upgrades that I know about use an EFC of 176 for the OK Select.

I don't know what the 1059 code looks like.

Have you checked your IR file to make sure you don't have and residual keymove, learn or special protocol assigned to that OK/Select button tha is blocking the setup codes OK/Select?

Can you confirm that 00176 isn't the OK/Select function you are looking for?

Edit: I used the new JP1 master file, and the only upgrade I could find using PID 0020 also used 00176 for OK/Select.

FWIW the bin file is precisely 2048 bytes but does not appear to be a simple binary image of the eeprom/flash. There is no recognizable (to me anyway) signature and it doesn't resemble the data usually seen. It's possible that as Rob said, it's encrypted or obfuscated in some way.

I'm trying so hard to not ask a stupid question but what is this done in? IR.exe, the closest I see is the devices section but it always shows the same devices not the ones selected and I don't seem to be able to edit any of the built in codes.

If I were worried about asking stupid questions, I wouldn't know anything! But this wasn't a stupid question!

You are right, you can't get this information about the built in setup codes from IR, since IR only works with the user data, not the built in information.


I used the Lookup Table. This conains information on most of UEI's setup codes, but unfortunately, not the 1059.

I still think you need to check your keymoves, and learns to make sure you don't have anything blocking the ok/select button.
