Did anybody buy one of these? I am a bit suspicious as they are new and have sold over 21. I suspect they are Chinese fakes (coming from Hong Kong) also the picture has the doughnut ring.

I bought 2. Arrived yesterday. Brand new, with user's manual, shipped from China. Great Deal!

Do they have the donut ring like the picture? Do they work with JP1?

I asked the seller about that and he said that his remotes look like the one in the picture.

Yes, it has the donut style selection ring, and it has the "One For All" logo printed on it. It is identical to to the one I am replacing which finally wore out. I purchased my original one at Circuit City back at the end of 2002 for around $70.

Do they work with JP1?
If it does then I will get one too, set it up and compare it to my Harmony 785.

I have asked the seller but no response.

Cheers

Edit: here's another seller with better pics, showing the battery compartment

If you asked the seller if the remote works with JP1, don't expect an answer because chances are they don't know.

I can answer for them that this remote WILL work with JP1, however I would still advise against getting the donut ring version of this remote.

Here's one with arrow keys:

How bad is the Donut Ring 8910? I have a arrow 9910 and it is starting to wear out. I like the remote and have been able to do a lot of things with it thanks to all the info on this forum. I know the general consensus is that the donut ring version is a no, but why? Is it the arrow function, the layout, or something else different about the donut ring version that makes it "dreaded"?

I've had both - and certainly PREFER the individual buttons to the donut ring. That said - it FUNCTIONS pretty well. The layout is IDENTICAL on both remotes.

It is simply a "feel" thing. That ring sort of "floats" and does not feel secure, but when you press the correct location, the correct arrow button signals gets sent. I set one up with the extender for my sister's HT over 8 years ago, and they have used it just fine without whinging about the ring - so it's really just a personal preference about whether YOU will find it sufficiently annoying (or disconcerting, or just "weird") to make it a show-stopper for you.

From a programming point of view, the two versions of the remote are identical (in other words, when you download using IR.exe, it won't know which one you have), so the difference is entirely cosmetic.

You could, for example, buy the donut version and load the current IR file from your "arrow key" remote into it.

out of curiosity, is the circuit board button layout the same? For example, could you replace the button pad and front case of a donut ring with a non donut ring case? If that made no sense, basically take a working donut ring and use parts from a non donut ring to make the working remote a non donut ring?

No, the buttons are in different place on the circuit board, so you can't switch. tried it back in 2003:

Interestingly, that original ebay listing is still good, so if you're in the market for a donut ring style 8910, they're still available for $18 shipped.
