This is primarily for Tommy Tyler, but may be of interest to others.

As the proud owner of a TT JP1.2/3 USB interface cable with the dazzling flashing lights, I was REALLY using it a lot the other day, as I had to update my Atlas OCAP to incorporate all of my new Christmas toys.

I was doing a lot of uploading/downloading as I was learning and testing upgrades for my new devices and tweaking the setup.

After several hours of this, one time the interface stopped working. ("No interface could be found" message). This happens from time to time, and I usually just unplug the interface and re-plug it in, and the computer finds it once again. This time, however, the interface was really hot! Like so hot that I could only grab it for about 2 seconds to unplug it and set it down.

After a few minutes it ccooled down and I tried it again and it worked (and continues to work) just fine.

Now, during the extended period of use (when it overheated), I had the interface plugged into a powered USB hub, and since that event, I have used it only in a direct USB port in my laptop (Vista, if you must ask).

Could this be related to the USB hub? Or is it simply typical/expected after extended use of the interface for it to overheat?

P.S. Speaking of those new toys, I HIGHLY recommend the LG BD390 Network Blu-Ray player! It's AWESOME! In addition to playing BDs, it wirelessly streams videos from Netflix (in HD), and YouTube and from your media library on your computer with a GREAT interface and quality!

I'm surprised that it would overheat.

Laptop USB ports will (should per USB specification) only supply 100mA to a USB device unless the device digitally requests a higher level of current. At 0.5 watts, it's not easy to get the whole device very hot. On the other hand, the power which can be drawn from self-powered hubs is limited only by the power handling capability of the hub. Since each port on a powered hub must supply 500mA or more, I suppose that a couple of amps might be available.

I have only used Tommy's JP1.2/3 cable from a low-power USB port, because that's easily available. It has never gotten warm, even under "lots" of usage.

Mine overheated once when I left it in the USB port overnight. Tommy tried to recreate the occurence, but it never did it again. That was over a year ago. Recently, I left it plugged in for days and it never got hot.
