Sky+ with URC-8550

Post by remoteneeded »

1. Device: Sky+
2. Type of device: Sat
3. Year: 2008
4. JP1/UEI Remote model: 8550 Topline
5. Do you have a JP1 cable? Yes
6. Still have original remote? Yes
7. Checked the file section? Yes
8. Checked Pronto file section (at R/C)? Yes
9. Partially working setup code? No
10. Learning remote question? No

It's been two years since I've posted here, so I've done pretty well on my own, but this one has stumped me!

I've been happily using the 8550 with Sky for a long time. The remote requires a protocol upgrade for it to work with Sky, (Protocol 20). Looking through the files here for Sky+, I need the same protocol. The problem I'm having is that all the Sky+ upgrades are for RM which tells me that my remote is not supported as it needs a protocol upgrade. In KM it always just sorted out the protocol for me. I'm happy to continue with KM, but I can't work out the device numbers. It seems that it's just a slight change from my Sky setup, but so far it's stumped me. Any ideas?

Many thanks from a very happy JP1 user of many years!

The only difference between the Sky+ and the Sky upgrades is that Sky+ uses subdevice 12, whereas Sky uses subdevice 0. So if you have working KM file for Sky, simply update it with with subdevice 12. Of course you need to add the signals for the PVR functions, but you can certainly copy those from RM (even if you get those protocol error popups) into a KM file.

As for why RM can't handle this protocol for your remote, I don't know. I suspect during some previous update, something else got broken, since that protocol seems to be broken in RM for quite a number of remotes right now.

Tried it with sub device 12, still no joy. I'm going to go back to first principles, dig out my old Sky box and see whether or not I can control it. Now I've thought about it I got the Sky device upgrade from the One for All site, way back when, so it may be that the KM version I have is no good. I'll also dig out my Pronto and capture the Sky+ remote to see if I've got some wacky version. I'll report back when I've eliminated some variables.

OK I can now see why it's not working, I just can't work out how to fix it.

Within KM, when I load the Sky (not plus) upgrade, the Protocol Name goes to Manual, and the Device and Sub Device boxes disapear to be replaced with Device1, 2 & 3. I've tried various numbers in these boxes, but I can't end up with RC6-6-20 Dev:0 Sub:12

The closest I've got is:
RC6-6-20 Dev:12 Sub:0
RC6-8-20 Dev:0 Sub:12

All checked by learning into Pronto. Any idea what I need to enter into Device1, 2 & 3, and/or fixed data?

Just discovered that in KM9.14 you can select the RC6-M-20n, but using this I get no IR from the remote at all.

Thanks

All sorted! Fixed data of EC 00 does it. Frustratingly this is the data that KM came up with by selecting the RC6-M-20n protocol, but for some reason it didn't work when I tried it, (it works now!). All's well that ends well.

Thanks

UPDATE: Using either the manual or RC6-M-20n protocol in KM 9.14 produces an upgrade that doesn't work with 8550. Using KM 8.44 and manually entering the same fixed data and it all works fine. A bug in KM?

I'm not quite sure I see the same problem as you do. Here is your KM upgrade produced by KM v8.44, using manual settings:

Code: Select all

Upgrade Code 0 = 07 37 (SAT/1847) Sky Digibox (KM v8.44)
 20 00 BE FC FE A0 E1 EC 00 00 01 02 03 04 05 06
 07 08 09 20 21 0C 5C 6E 6F CC 58 59 5A 5B CB 3E
 3D 28 24 6D 3F 40 70 CB 84 80 80
KeyMoves
 36 F3 07 37 83«back up»
End

Upgrade Protocol 0 = 00 20 (P8/740) Custom Protocol for SAT/1847 Sky Digibox (KM v8.44)
 0C 1C 21 A9 60 20 DB 00 A2 16 A0 02 22 44 22 1F
 20 74 01 A2 1B A0 02 22 44 A9 20 20 DB 00 22 23
 20 79 01 22 1F 06 54 06 54 06 54 06 54 20 74 01
 A5 5F 85 54 20 79 01 A2 2A A0 A1 22 44 22 06 90
 C2 60 3C 04 55 80 03 3C 08 55 26 54 B0 0D A2 86
 A0 01 22 44 A9 10 20 DB 00 80 0B A9 10 20 DB 00
 A2 86 A0 01 22 44 C6 55 D0 E0 60
End
I loaded your upgade into KM v9.14, then changed the protocol to RC6-M-20n, set the device to 0 and the subdevice to 12, with the following result:

Code: Select all

Upgrade Code 0 = 07 37 (SAT/1847) Sky Digibox (KM v9.14)
 20 00 BE FC FE A0 E1 EC 00 00 01 02 03 04 05 06
 07 08 09 20 21 0C 5C 6E 6F CC 58 59 5A 5B CB 3E
 3D 28 24 6D 3F 40 70 CB 84 80 80
KeyMoves
 36 F3 07 37 83«back up»
End

Upgrade Protocol 0 = 00 20 (P8/740) RC6-M-20n (KM v9.14)
End
The two upgrades produce identical results, so I don't see any reason why there should be any trouble using KM v9.14.

I agree they're the same... OK, done a bit of investigation. I was using the file Sky_Digibox_fullyworking_KM.txt as the basis for creating a Sky+ upgrade. If you load this into KM 8.44 and manually set the protocol you get:

Code: Select all

Upgrade Code 0 = 07 37 (SAT/1847) Sky Digibox (KM v8.44)
 20 00 BA 7E 08 80 41 EC 00 00 01 02 03 04 05 06
 07 08 09 20 21 0C 5C 81 58 59 5A 5B 80 83 84 6F
 70
KeyMoves
 AC F3 07 37 6D«red» ¦AB F3 07 37 6E«green» ¦17
 F3 07 37 3C«text»
End
Where-as if you load it into KM 7.14, and change the protocol to RC6-M-20n, set the device to 0 and the subdevice to 12 you get:

Code: Select all

Upgrade Code 0 = 07 37 (SAT/1847) Sky Digibox (KM v9.14)
 20 00 A1 EC 00 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 20
 21
End
Which is very different and non working.

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't make it very clear exactly what I'd done.

I shall update the file I've generated and uploaded, and remove the mention of KM 8.44 only.

 21
End
You have indeed found a bug here which I will have to fix. However, it is not related to the Manual vs. RC6-M-20n protocol usage, but rather a bug in loading an older upgrade file for the URC-8060. The bug causes KM to lose the function assignments to some of the buttons on the Buttons sheet, resulting in the much shorter device upgrade you are seeing.

Thanks Mike. All your JP1 hard work is really apretiated in our house!

You'll be pleased to hear that once again our remotes are set up and working perfectly.
