question about all in on remotes

Hi,
I have aquick question all in one remotes.
I'm trying to test a code that will make my sony blu ray dvd player region free (only for DVD play back, have tons of Japanese DVD for my kids).
I found a hack that call for all in one remote control with a MAGIC button.
Now I understand that the magic button is the setup button on some remotes. Now there are tons of all in one remotes, is there a certain model I should buy? Looks like I need a remote that I can program the buttons since the instructions say something like this

4. Hold the magic button until it flashes twice.
5. Press 994
6. Press Magic Key (don't hold)
7. Press 00189 (if your oneforall remote uses 4 digit or 3 digit codes, use less leading zeros)
8. Press 1 ( this sets it to key 1 - it flashes twice )


I have 2 remotes URC-200 automator and Harmoney remote. Will they be enought or do I need another remote. If I need another remote, can anyone recommend a remote?

First question, do you have a US or another region Sony Bluray player?

I don't know what the URC-200 is, but if it has DVD setup code DVD/0533 or Video/1533, then you should be able to do it. Details were provided in this thread.

In the thread I linked above is a link to the british AV Forum thread where I found this info. That AVF thread has since added info about a Harmony-based solution for sending the region-free hack signals. That might be simpler for you, if you're a Harmony kind of guy (which I ain't.)

I have the US BDP-S350 and have applied the DVD Region-Free hack, all indications were correct (flashing 24p light etc.) and it doesn't work - at least insofar as European DVD's goes. This may be because the US player does not have the circuitry necessary for PAL playback. Since your Japanese DVDs are also NTSC, it might work for you.

The instructions that you found were specific for universal remotes with the brand name "One For All", they won't work any just any 'all in one' universal remote.

While the exact step-by-step instructions might change slightly depending on which remote you get, almost all "One For All" remotes can be programmed to send the command in question.

Of course, like the Capn said, there's no guarantee that it will work, even with the right "One For All" remote.

Capn, I saw that thread before and I'm already on the list. I was just trying to see if I can do it myself. I read the same thing that it might not work with the US models if you are trying to play PAL discs but since I have NTSC region 2 DVD I thought it might work. I saw few people who confirmed that they were able to play region 2 NTSC DVD and I'm hoping it will be the same for me. I will wait and see if I get the information from that site.

Rob, Thanks for the clarification. I will go to radioshack this weekend and get me one (if still can't get the harmony code).

Be aware that there's a step missing from the instructions that you posted. Those instructions tell you how to program an "advanced code", but advanced codes belong to setup codes (ie, DVD/0533, etc), so the first step should be to program the correct setup code to the DVD button on the remote.
