I'm trying a JP1.X serial cable on an Atlas 1056 remote (both just purchased) with IR.exe. I have it connected to the serial port (which works properly for an externally-connected modem), the remote connected with the red stripe at pin 1 (batteries installed), and have "JP1.x (Serial or USB-Serial)" selected under the Interface menu. When I select Check Interface, I receive an error "Failed to open JP1.x interface." "Driver Status" says "The serial/parallel driver is functioning properly." The backlight does light when I connect the cable. I suspect I don't have something installed or not doing something correct, but I don't see it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Is this a DIYGadgets interface? Did you build it yourself? If the former, some of us have purchased interfaces with C2 and R7 reversed. Take it apart and have a look. Find silkscreened on the PCB C2 and R7. R7 should be a surface mount (SM) resistor and C2 should be a SM capacitor. See this thread (the last 2 pages) for more info and associated LINK.

Thanks for the reply. This was from InterfacePlace. Supposedly, they check them each before they ship them. It also has an inline disconnect for the JP1.X (which I have disconnected). I'll open it up and check the wiring. I have an email to them as well. Thanks!
Tommy Tyler has brilliantly documented a "challenge" when using a true "JP 1.x" interface (i.e. one built to work with JP 1.1 and 1.2 remotes) on a JP 1.3 remote. The simple fix is bending back or clipping off pin 5 on the JP 1.3 remote.
If you have no JP 1.1 remotes (which is EXTREMELY likely - they are quite rare and were a short-lived design), you could potentially modify your interface to remove the JP1.1-specific components, thereby converting it to a "JP1.2-only" interface, which should work fine with your JP1.3 1056.
The "JP 1.2-only" interface works on both JP 1.2 and JP 1.3 remotes with NO such modification required, but the "JP 1.x" interface will not properly work on JP 1.3 remotes without that workaround.

Thanks for your reply. I agree that the controller is a JP1.3. The Interface Place cable has an inline, pin 5 disconnect that I have disconnected per those instructions. (I tried connecting it as well and received the same error.) I have two of the Atlas remotes and the error shows up with both. I'm awaiting a reply from Interface Place to see what they suggest as well.
