I can pick up a 6131 for around 30 bucks but I was wondering how hard is it to adapt to use with JP1 cable? I gather it has the holes so what needs to be done from there on? I gather it is JP1.2 if I remember reading rightly.
So the question being is it worth it and how hard is it to modify?
Thanks in advance.

You need to add an EEPROM and the 6-pin adapter.
The 6131 is a pretty popular remote for its layout, size and feel. Here are instructions for modifying it for JP1 use. You have to decide whether that is within your skill level to make those changes. I, for one, could not.
Rob has pre-modded 6131's he sells for $19 plus $5 shipping, beating the price you're quoting.

Judging from his email address, I'm guessing that Ned is in New Zealand, so shipping for one of my remotes from the USA to NZ would be $11, which brings the total to $30 shipped, but the remotes are JP1-ready, so no modifications are needed.

You could consider the 8820 - it's like the 6131 but it is already has the pins and is JP1.2. I've got three of them
I haven't modded the remote (the 8820 has the JP1.2 pins already) but I did build a JP1.2 interface which was pretty straightforward. If you're in New Zealand then I believe Dick Smith's might have all the parts you'd need. Tommy Tylers' JP1.x/JP1.2 plans are here. I'm not as good at bending wires neatly so I built mine on some copper stripboard, canabalised an old IDE hard drive connector for ribbon cable and 6-pin connector and housed it in a box that I got 4 AA rechargeable batteries in. I haven't posted any photo's as the thing is ugly.

Just to be clear, the URC-8820 looks similar to the URC-6131N remote, not the URC-6131 remote.
