Hi Cindy.
What I suggested was to program the advanced codes (advanced codes are the codes that need to be assigned to the numeral 1-5 keys). Here's the page where this is discussed:

You'll see that the operation is different based on lcd or non-lcd. I'm not sure how it'll work on your remote. Remember to use 5 digit EFC's (i.e. the EFC you are assigning to numeral 1 key is "00189"). The section to look at is section "B. To program a code" to a key.

ON the page linked above, what you were doing was "testing" the code. Now I want you to program the code to the actual numeral button.
Big note: make sure you've used the setup code 0533 for DVD. I think you've got that part working.

OK, apparently jumping around between the various references and the slight variations in terminology are confusing you, so here in one complete sequence is what you need to do to execute the sequence of events you describe in your very first post (I do not know whether or not that sequence WORKS, but this is how you execute it):

(1) Program your DVD device to use device code 0533:
(a) Press and hold SETUP until the two bottom IR segments flash twice. The Program Keys will appear as SETUP flashes repeatedly.
(b) Press DEV SET once. The Device Setup programming screen will appear:
(c) Press DVD once. The key will animate.
(d) Enter 0-5-3-3. If performed correctly, the two bottom IR segments will flash twice.
(e) [TEST the code] Aim the remote control at your DVD player and press POWER once. The device should turn on/off.
(f) If the code works, press OK once. The two bottom IR segments will display one long flash.

(2) Program the EFCs for the hacking sequence to numeric buttons 1 through 5 as follows:
(a) Start with the remote in DVD mode. Press and hold SETUP until the two bottom IR segments flash twice. The Program Keys will appear as SETUP flashes repeatedly.
(b) Press OTHER once. The Other programming screen will appear.
(c) Using the Number Keys, enter 9-9-4. The two bottom IR segments will flash twice. [You are now in Keymover mode]
(d) Press DVD once. The selected source device menu screen, including HOME,will be displayed.
(e) Press (don't hold) SETUP-0-0-1-8-9;
(f) Press "1"
(g) Upon keymoving, the two bottom IR segments will flash twice as confirmation. [You have now assigned EFC 00189 to DVD button "1".]
(h) The Program Keys will appear again.
(i) Repeat steps (2) (e) thru (g) for the remaining four functions, i.e.:
SETUP-0-0-2-5-5 to "2";
SETUP-0-0-0-9-5 to "3";
SETUP-0-0-2-2-1 to "4"; and
SETUP-0-0-0-7-9 to "5"
(j) Exit programming by pressing HOME once.
(k) The display will return to the last-selected device menu screen.

(3) NOW you should be able to execute the sequence described in your original post:
(a) Turn off the DVD player (put it into "standby");
(b) Press DVD, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in sequence;
(3) DVD player should turn on and indicate "success";
(4) Press DVD, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in sequence again (may not be required);
(5) Player should turn off;
(6) Unplug player for >5 seconds;
(7) Plug in player;
(8) According to your OP, you should now be region-free.

P.S. Just for your info, EFC 00255 is the function for "angle" on the OEM remote and EFC 00079 is the "Power Toggle" function, so you really need not program 00079 to the "5" key, but just use "Power" instead of "5" in the sequnces of Step (3).

Thank you so much for details instruction. It was easy to follow.

I noticed that after I put device code(0553) for DVD, I able to turn off/on DVD. When I pressed "OK" button, the two bottom IR segments display two flashes, not one long flash like describe. is that matters??

I completed program EFC code form 1 to 5. Each time IR segments display two flashes. That's working OK.

When I pressed "DVD" key, then type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It never display "success" on DVD player. I tried with only DVD region3 in DVD player. "CAN NOT PLAY" on DVD player
I tried with only DVD region1 in DVD player. it plays OK. I tried with DVD region3 and region1 in DVD player. It plays DVD region1 for DVD region3 "CAN NOT PLAY" on DVD player
I tried with no DVD in DVD player. Display "NO DISC". That's ok
I did try pressed "DVD" key, then type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 twice. It never display "success" on DVD player.

I did use code 977, and 980 to clear setting each time before I started.
I started all over from enter device code and completed program EFC code form 1 to 5. Still the same. Continued to get "CAN NOT PLAY". When DVD region in the machine.

I'll try procedure from previous note again tomorrow. I need to take a break.

You may need to go to some of the DVD hacking sites to see if there's any word of different versions of this player. Sometimes you have to check the serial number to see if your unit is one of the ones that can be hacked.

Also, I notice that the hack that you posted is for a region 2 player (in Europe) whereas you have a region 1 player (presumably here in the States), so it's also possible that the US models don't have the same feature as the UK models.

For some players instead of 1 2 3 4 5 you need to use the following

In standby mode, press sequentially 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 and you will get the SUCCESS message.

Then again 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 and the player will go back into standby mode

I guess not, if the setup code works, then it is set properly. That note is straight out of the 9960 manual, however. :?

OK. First question. When you press the "1"-"5" buttons, does the remote TRANSMIT a signal after EACH button press? (it should). Also, after pressing "5" does the DVD player turn on? Just test the "5" button alone. It should work EXACTLY like the Power button. If not, then the EFCs are not entered correctly.

:cry: My limited experience would suggest that you want to do this with no disc in the machine. Perhaps you need to do it with the disc tray open? As Rob said, this is getting out of the JP1/Remote Control realm and into the DVD-hacking arena, of which this forum's members are not necessarily expert.

I think Rob is right. DVD in US is different then DVD in UK. Even though it has the same model#. The instruction that I found it work for DVD in UK.

Just test the "5" button alone. It should work EXACTLY like the Power button. If not, then the EFCs are not entered correctly.

Yes it works like Power button.

One thing that I didn't try is to entry 1122334455. I'll try and post it for result.

Did try to enter 1122334455, still didn't work.
I guessed DVD player in the US(my model anyway) couldn't be hack to play all regions. I'll continue to do some reading on it.
