Have code but need help with setup

Post by Cindy »

I have Sony DVD player DVP-NC615. I want to make it region free. I did some reading on the web and I found code and steps on how to do it but I need OFA remote. I bought URC9960 B01. I didn't see "MAGIC" key on it.
The following txt I found on the web.
Just made my Sony DVP-NC615 region free using a one for all remote. It was region 2 locked before, now it plays region 1 disks as well.
Program the dvd function of the one4all with a device code of 0533.

Now using the MagicKey function program buttons 1 through 5 with the following codes. (for the dvd function)

1 - 189
2 - 255
3 - 095
4 - 221
5 - 079

Put the dvd player into standby, press keys 1,2,3,4,5 in sequence. The player should switch on and say SUCCESS. Then press the keys again in the same sequence and the player powers off. Now unplug from the mains for 5 seconds. (Not sure if the second sequence is actually required but I ended up doing this, because of another post on this site.
Now test it with a region 1 disk - it works hurra!
For my OFA I think I need to use 5 digits. If I do not have "MAGIC" key, What's key can I use?? Can I use "OTHER" key on the remote.

Then I found JP1 webpage and start look in to it. Hooo boy... so much information. I hope that I don't have to use JP1 and down load software to my remote. If that's only way then I have to do more reading.

Thank You so much for looking in to it.

Use the "Setup" button.

If you only need to use this sequence ONCE, don't bother programming the digits keys as described. You can send an Advanced code (like the "189" you would assign to the "1" button) directly as follows:

Ensure you are in DVD mode with the DVD/0533 device code active.

Press "Setup-1-8-9". When you press the "9", the function for "Advanced Code 189" will be sent by your remote;
Press "Setup-2-5-5". The SECOND code will be sent.
Press "Setup-0-9-5"... and so on until you complete the sequence.

If the 9960B01 uses 5-digits EFCs, then modify them by adding two "0" s before the 3-digit code.

0533 is the device code for DVD player, so it's not the same thing as the Advanced codes where you have to put "00" for 3 digit codes. Just use 0533 on the DVD device key.

Sony DVP-NC615
OFA 9960B01 remote.

It didn't work. The following were steps that I did.

On remote press "DVD" key, then type in 0533
Put DVD on standby(red light on)
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00189
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00255
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00095
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00221
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00079
powered DVD off for 5 seconds.

How do I know if DVD is in ready mode with the DVD/0533 device code active?
Do I have to type any key between "SETUP" step?
After last step "SETUP" then type 00079, Do I have to type or hold any key?
My DVD is region 1(USA DVD). Is in possible to make it region free?
Is there procedure with details?

Thank You

You first need to assign setup code DVD/0533 to the remote's DVD button, and from your description it sounds like you have not done this step. The procedure is on page 8 & 9 of the URC-9960 manual. The "manufacturer's code" is what we call the setup code (0533 in your case). There is also a "blink-back" procedure (page 11 Checking The Codes) that can tell you what setup code is currently assigned to a device button on the remote.

In each of the five steps above, the remote will transmit the IR command when you press the 5th digit button, so you may want to hold that button a little longer to make sure the DVD player gets the command.

It was sound simple enough. I left DVD region1 and region3 inside.
Put DVD player on standby.
I did assign set up code(0533) for DVD, because I can turn off and on the DVD player.
I completed "SETUP"
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00189
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00255
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00095
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00221
On remote press "SETUP" then type 00079
At the 5th digit, I hold just a bit longer. I can see IR moves forward

DVD display show "CAN NOT PLAY"(for region3) At TV it show "Playback is Out of limitation" But other DVD region1 plays OK
Any suggestion??

Have you tried doing the entire sequence TWICE as your original post suggested?

To enter entire sequence twice, is that for when you programing the digit keys? But I'll try it. Do I have to reset/clear my OFA remote and start all over again?

Thank You,

One suggestion is that the key sequence to make the player region free might be time sensitive. That is if you don't enter the sequence fast enough, it doesn't take.

My suggestion would be to program the numeral keys as per the instructions you already have, i.e. program the advanced codes to the keys "1", "2", etc. Then enter the entire sequence as per the instruction you post in the OP. I'll bet that works. secret menu features typically are fussy about time.

Give my suggestion a try.

Maybe even take it a stage further and put all 5 buttons into a macro.

How would I program the numeral keys? My URC9960 B01 do not have "MAGIC" key. What's key on my OFA is = MAGIC key?
What's sequence or procedure do I need? Really new at this URC thing.

If the program the numeral keys do not work
How would I program 5 buttons into macro??

These tech stuff might come easy to most of you, but to me it likes reading other language.

Thank You

The Capn gave you most of the info in the first reply in this thread.

The "setup" button is the "magic" button.
