I assume you are talking about using the 30 second skip function with a DirecTV DVR powered by TiVo. This is a feature of the TiVo, not of the remote. Pressing Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select while watching a recorded program (something in your Now Playing List) will change how your TiVo responds to the IR code for advance (->|).
When 30-second-skip is enabled, pressing the advance button while watching at normal speed with do a 30 second skip, instead of the normal behavior, which is "jump-to-live" if watching something in the buffer, or "jump-to-end" if watching something recorded. It does not change the "skip-to-tick" behavior of the advance button when if fast-forward or rewind.
Note that you can turn the 30-second-skip on and off using the Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select code. Also, it will get turned off if your TiVo is powered off or reboots for any reason. _________________ -- Greg
