Need help chosing a remote

Hi Rob...

I've been on this site several times in the past, last time when I bought a 6 devices european Kameleon 2nd generation... and brought it back to the vendor when I learned here that it wasn't JP1 tweakable

Now I'm again shopping for a universal remote for my HT system, and I knew this was the place to check for...

I would like to buy from you an 9960 (and JP1 Cable) or a 6690 (I already know the JP1.2 stuff is work-in-progress, but I have faith you guys will finally succeed with this)

I don't have too much stuff... just a Philips TV, a couple of Pioneer DVD Players (DV-525 and DV-575A), and a Pioneer DVD Recorder DVR-530H S

The DVD Recorder is the one giving me troubles, as I could not drive it with any universal remote I tried so far (all low-end, BTW don't want to spend too much money)

Just have a question now: which one would you go with, Rob learning capacity-wise with and without JP availability?

Also, can you quote a price for each of the remotes shipped to Italy and paid with PayPal by my account linked to my Credit Card? for the 9960 add a Simple JP1 Parallel cable too...

You should be able to calculate all of the numbers from the data and links Rob provides in his first post of this thread.

Any JP1 remote can handle the devices you list, although I think you'll have a problem differentiating between the two Pioneer DVD players. Do they have anything like unit codes you can set on them?

There are upgrades for Pioneer DVD recorders in the file section so you should be OK there.

Italy is problematic as it doesn't accept Global Priority Mail, but I think I can ship a remote there for about the same price as my regular international rate (ie, $9.50). You can figure out the rest by reading the first post in my "for sale" thread.

...so you are inherently suggesting to go the 9960 way because of the readily available JP1 support, right?

Oh! BTW I forgot to mention I have a Denon AVR-3801 A/V Amp/Tuner too...

Anyway, I have seen there is at least an AVR-3803 upgrade in the files, and the remote used by the two amplifiers is the same, I believe, so I should be able to manage that too...

Should this fail, there are some CCF files for my 3801 around that I can try and use as a starting point to develop an upgrade... and there is still the original remote I can use

About the two DVD Players, you are right: they respond to the same IR commands, but I usually keep only one active, so there is no problem...

In the first post I read "URC-9960 B01 (Kameleon - 4k EEPROM)"... the mod you do adds only the pins or also the EEPROM is added? Does this added EEPROM expand the IR learning capability of the remote, or simply does something good to the JP1 stuff?

What's the trouble some europeans have found with the 9960? As far as my devices are supported natively or with the upgrades, I should be fine, right?

And, finally, why people here seems to go crazy for the 9910, when the 9960 Kameleon is such a nice-looking piece of hardware? Hidden features in the 9910?

He's not suggesting any remote in particular, he's just saying that when you're a JP1 user, you can load the code for any device that you have.

Do you still have the original Denon remote? If so, you don't need to worry about finding a CCF file or anything like that because you can use your JP1 learning remote to capture the signals from the Denon remote and then use the captured info to build a new upgrade.

Actually, I haven't had any problems, I just looked Italy up here to see whether GPM was accepted and found that it wasn't.

The newer Kameleons come with the 4k chip installed, all I do is add the 6-pin connector.

Many Europeans buy the Kameleon on ebay not knowing that it's designed for the US market, and they are usually disappointed to find that they can't use it to work the Sky sat boxes, etc. Once again, this would not be a concern for a JP1 user.

I don't know that people are "crazy" for the URC-9910 in particular, my best seller is the URC-8910, which is basically the same remote as the URC-9910 but without the RF extender box. Generally, I think most users prefer hard buttons to touchscreens, so they're more likely to go with a sensible remote like the URC-8910 or 9910 rather than the Kameleon, but to each their own. If you like the Kameleon, don't worry about what other people think.

Pioneer dvdr's have at least 3 codesets. Its the alternate codesets that will be hard to find preset into a universal remotes. see your manual on how to switch remote addresses.

I'm in the process of printing and reading all the JP1 docs I can get hold of... hopefully this will prevent me from placing dumb questions again

I ordered the Kam 9960 a couple of days ago and I look forward to the package to come...

I plan to use rechargeable cells... I have them on hands and it doesn't cost me too much to try them...

Has anybody tried to find and use a Li-Ion cell that can fit the battery compartment of the Kam and has the right Voltage Output?

Just speculating here, since I have never seen a Kam "in person" , but when I get mine I'll do some researchs...
